A Story From The Stands – What Have Former Nebraska Football Players Learned From The Game – Frosty

Great game from a great name

You are sure many people will remember the “drama”. Johnny Rodgers throws a touchdown pass to Frosty Anderson in the second quarter of the 1973 Orange Bowl game against Notre Dame.

“I wasn’t going to be on that play,” Frosty Anderson said. “We knew the play would be there and it would be an easy six.” He was and the rest of the night was a disaster for the Irish. But that’s not the game Frosty considers his best.

“The Wisconsin game was my best game,” he said. “We kept falling behind and I finally scored and put Nebraska ahead. I thought that would be it but Wisconsin came back and scored. That’s when Tony Davis went to work for about 30 yards with one of his three rushes.” Nebraska won.

“Somebody comes in and I have something like nine catches and 160 yards,” Frosty said. “Even though it was an I-back kind of performance, I didn’t think much of it.”

It’s no surprise that Frosty would have a memorable performance against a Big 10 team. He comes from Big 10 roots. His father, Forrest, Sr., known as “Fordy”, coached basketball at Michigan State. The family moved to Scottsbluff where his father took a position as a basketball coach. Frosty became a standout for Scottsbluff and caught the attention of Nebraska coach Jim Ross during the Scottsbluff-Fremont game.

Coach Devane knew Frosty’s father as an assistant football coach at Michigan State.

“I always assumed I was going to go to Michigan State but when the Nebraska offer came up I thought what the heck and signed,” he said. Not a bad decision considering just two years later, the young Scottsbluff star would be wearing a national championship ring.

Like all freshmen in those days, Frosty started out in the Nebraska freshman football program. That team had only one loss. “We lost to a Kearney State first team,” Frosty said.

“Jim Walden was our new football coach,” Frosty said. “It was my first experience of ‘south-facing,’ and he preached three things: ag-ile, be mob-ile and hos-tile. Frosty finished his sophomore year.

“I’m known as the other team’s hope,” he said. “To play at Nebraska, you have to be top-notch, be accountable for what you do and be patient. That’s the way it is.” Frosty was knocked onto the scout team and was a “blackshirt bet” before earning his day in the Memorial Stadium sun.

His first varsity touchdown came on a Van Brownson pass during the Utah State game. “It was out and over the hook pattern,” Frosty recalled with a smile on his face. “He almost knocked me over and I had to go out for it but I got it.”

Patience and practice paid off as the talented split end moved up the depth chart. He made the ABC Sports highlight film with 3rd clutch. Down and 15 yard catch against Colorado. “It was a perfect seventeen-yard down-and-out pattern and I caught it.”

Not everything went the Husker’s way during Frosty’s senior year. “We went to California to play UCLA and Mark Harmon and they beat us. I lost my starting job in that game,” Frosty said. Oklahoma beat Nebraska 27-0. “It took me almost seven years to stop taking the Oklahoma loss so personally.”

Despite the loss, Frosty also earned all-conference honors and academic honors at his split end position. “I met Mark Harmon at an academic event and he told me they were really scared of Nebraska. I was surprised by that.”

Pro scouts also noticed Frosty. The New Orleans Saints drafted him in the eighth round as a wide receiver. His professional career lasted two years. During his first season, he separated his shoulder late in the first half against the New York Jets, who were led by Namath. “They had to keep me because of my contract, but the next year I made the cut.”

That ended Frosty Anderson’s football. Frosty is still in great shape and an avid runner. “Not marathon stuff,” he quickly pointed out. “I don’t have time for that.”

If he turns a little in his office chair, he can look out the window of his 11th-floor office and see Memorial Stadium, but the memories of football don’t consume him. “When you have kids, you soon realize they’re not impressed that you played for the Huskers. They just want to change their diapers. It didn’t take long for me to move on.”

He has also become a unique fan. “People have to remember they’re just kids. Kids don’t listen to you. Nobody wants to tell me we played a bad game or we lost a game. We knew that. It’s just a game.”

Not in Nebraska, Frosty, especially with a great name like yours.
