Quarterback Contraversy in DC?

It’s obvious who should take the first snap for the Washington Redskins next fall. The answer is so obvious, anyone who thinks otherwise needs to have their brain examined. Maybe new head coach Joe Gibbs should order a CAT scan on Patrick Ramsey before mini-camp takes place.

Not only should Mark Brunell be anointed quarterback now, he won’t have to compete for the job until at least 2005. Simply put, Brunell is a proven NFL quarterback and Ramsey is not. Brunell has started eight seasons (excluding 2003), while Ramsey has yet to start 20 games. Owner Dan Snyder gave Gibbs a vague mandate to go to the Super Bowl in the next three seasons. Who is most likely to accomplish this?

There is no legitimate argument anyone could make for starting Ramsey ahead of a healthy Brunel in 2004. Here are some reasons why Ramsey should start:

-Ramsey is the quarterback of the future – There is no doubt that Ramsey has the ability to solidify the Redskins’ quarterback situation for years to come. If the organization believes Ramsey is the guy for the next few years, he’ll have to take over the starting job someday. However, if or when he accepts the job, he will have growing pains to bear. Ideally, a third-year quarterback who has started parts of his first two years should be ready to start his playoff season. In Ramsey’s case, everything he learned in his first two seasons must be discarded. The coaching staff needs to treat Ramsey like a rookie. It’s not an ideal situation to claim the starting quarterback job. With up to a third of the roster changing, new players must transition with a proven quarterback.

-Ramsey has good upside – If there’s a reason to give a quarterback the starting job, Browning Nagle, Rick Mirer and Heath Shuler should start in this league. Ramsey has potential, but he’s not sure. Although he posted good stats while playing at Tulane, he ran a pass-friendly offense against mid-major competition. He can’t be properly evaluated in his first two seasons, because he didn’t get legitimate NFL coaching and wasn’t in an adequate offensive system. A year from now, after an offensive staff with nearly 70 years of NFL experience evaluates him, it will be determined how high he actually is. This determination should be made on the practice field, not FedEx Field.

-Ramsey’s toughness earned him the right to lead the team in 2004 -Since when have NFL games been won on the ability to accept defeat? There’s a lot more to being an NFL quarterback than hitting in the pocket. While his attitude and competitiveness were outstanding last year in dire situations, that doesn’t mean he can be an effective NFL quarterback. Ramsey’s toughness has earned his teammates a standing ovation, but he’ll have to rack up yardage, points and wins to maintain that respect. He will be in a better position to produce in 2005 when he has a year under this coaching staff.

Not mentioned is how Ramsey’s response to the situation has made it clear that he is not ready to lead the team. After the Redskins announced they were acquiring Brunell, Ramsey’s agent publicly campaigned for a trade, where Ramsey could start. As he could earn around $2 million in incentives, it’s understandable why he’d want to start the league somewhere. However, he agreed to it when he signed the contract and didn’t want to risk his image for more than $2 million when he could earn between $30 and $100 million before his career was over. Any argument had to be behind closed doors. That he tries to force this in public calls into question his ability to be professional. Getting beat doesn’t make a quarterback professional. There are thousands of people who would have taken the same physical beating for his basic salary last year.

Many personnel moves have been scrutinized since Snyder has owned the Redskins, and rightfully so. Brunell could be the most expensive backup quarterback in the NFL next year. At least Ramsey will likely get a year to rest his body and learn how to be an NFL quarterback. Maybe he should learn how to bite his tongue while he’s at it. If he’s going to be the quarterback people think he can be, that’ll be a good lesson.
