The Three Brain Theory

So you want to know why you abused the person in the car in front of you without applying logic for a split second? Maybe you want to know why you are attracted to certain men/women and others? Or why does your dog do the crazy things he does? Why we humans are the most evolved species on the planet and still act like lizards at times and still make irrational decisions when we are in love, assuming they are perfectly logical.

The Three Brain Theory is a theory designed to explain why we do the things we do, even though they sometimes seem completely illogical. The basis of the theory is that the human brain did not simply evolve to the next level from our animal ancestors, but instead simply built more developed brains on top of each other. The first brain is the physical brain, essentially the fight-or-flight response found in everything from ants to lizards, basically your most basic core survival mechanism: survival and replication. The other brain is the emotional brain, found in most mammals and allows us to emotionally connect with things and do more than just the fight or flight response. The emotional brain is found in everything from cats and dogs to large-brained mammals like cows and horses. Of course these brains are normal and irrational, most of us don’t even know how they work and how they make us do stupid irrational things from time to time. Now the third brain is the brain that only humans on the planet have (apes and our closest ancestors have very small versions) and what really separates us from animals, is the logical brain. The logical brain is the most understood brain because it is often considered the most important and does most of our thinking. However, most people don’t know that the other 2 brains are actually more powerful and often make our decisions for us instead of the logical brain, then only through a process of backwards rationalization that makes us think we made a logical decision.

These three brains struggle in our daily lives, and with little effort to control itself, the most primitive brain always wins. This is why when we feel threatened, we often snap at people without even thinking about it. This is why we often make stupid decisions chasing the love of our life by doing things that make no logical sense but make a lot of sense to the emotional brain. I often think of them as 3 different people in your head always telling you different things, however they tell you things in different ways. The emotional brain feeds back to you through your gut, whether you feel happy, sad, anxious, etc., your emotional brain tells you that there is something good or bad about your current situation. Your physical brain communicates back to you primarily through fear, its duty to protect you from harm, so whenever it senses danger, it tells us to freeze or run away. The physical brain also controls our sexual impulses and desires, and that is why we are often completely distracted when we see an attractive member of the opposite sex, which is our mating instinct from our physical brain.

You will encounter events where fear doesn’t make logical sense, but your emotional and physical brain scares you, usually these are events where your physical and emotional brain began to form thousands of years ago. There is a sense of panic, but these days we have safeguards in place to prevent us from harm. Such things include going skydiving, working at great heights on a construction site, or going up to a girl at a club. In the past being high off the ground meant you had to hang on for dear life or you were going to die, this is not the case these days with all our safety devices but our physical brains don’t realize this and they try. Keep you alive any way you can (usually by clinging on for dear life).

So how does this help us? Now that we realize that we have 3 brains which are essentially completely different people living in our heads we can learn to tame these brains. Unfortunately most people go about it the wrong way. They don’t understand that there are 3 brains and when their physical or emotional brain tells them to do something, they completely shut down their logical brain and just follow its orders, they follow logic when they really aren’t. That’s why you often see others doing weird things (abuse on television anyone?) and they get really defensive if you question them about it, then later watch what they did and sometimes see it. A new light and see where they went wrong and how stupid they looked (when their logical brain comes back online). So the key to managing your other 2 brains is that your logical brain often shuts down when something happens and you have to turn it back on (by thinking rationally and considering everything everyone is telling you without defense) and think. A recent situation.

Once you turn it back on, you can train your other brain to respond differently, when a situation arises, stop your other brain from taking over and think about what you’re doing, and then switch it to try something else. Like when I meet my parents, I notice how often they get angry while watching football and someone drops the ball or does something stupid, while at the same time I laugh at the exact same incident. It’s not that I don’t think his game is bad, I’ve just learned that it’s just a game and it’s not worth getting mad at, and over time I’ve trained my emotional brain to think the same way.

Of course you can’t train your brain overnight, it takes time, whenever something happens, take control of your emotional or physical brain and stop it in your tracks, then think rationally (Am I really right to be angry? This) and that Take steps to replace bad feelings with good ones. Over time your emotional and physical brain will start to behave like naughty children who are now being given strict guidelines and will allow you to live a happier and more fulfilling life.
