To Money-Grubbing College Football Bowl Organizers: Call Off the Dogs Before You Ruin the Game

Going to a bowl game after playing in the regular season the year before was a huge reward and a sign of excellence. Now it has become an absolute joke.

What caused this sad state of affairs? I’m glad you asked. The answer is money-making bowl game organizers with dollar signs in their eyes. It’s all about making money at the expense of the game, the players and their pursuit of excellence.

You see there are only 120 major college football teams in Division 1-A, which the NCAA likes to call the FBS (Football Bowl Subdivision). The NCAA brain trust likes more and more ball games because they believe it promotes sports and becomes a money magnet.

He is killing the game like a wounded animal dying after being shot by a sportsman, even if he escapes his prey, bleeding in the process.

The proliferation of ball games would eventually diminish football’s appeal as America’s number one spectator sport. It may sound counterintuitive, but I’ve been covering or watching football for half a century and I can see history repeating itself.

I remember the power of thinking that baseball was king in America, and that it would never cease to be the sport of choice. Then basketball became real popular with pro level competitors. Then football became all the rage. I remember when pro football games weren’t even televised due to lack of demand. When you live long enough and pay attention, you see cycles develop.

Pro baseball made the mistake of expanding to more teams and more playoff games. Soon the quality of the game dropped, a lot of money was involved and the game was driven more by money than the pursuit of excellence.

Baseball club owners fielded crisp teams and people stopped coming. Some major cities won’t even support a bad team. Another sport became more popular after that.

Here’s the rub: We have 120 major league teams and now the bowl season has been extended to 35 games. That means 70 teams out of 120 will play in a bowl. The situation has become so dire that the NCAA is talking about waivers because not enough teams are currently eligible to play in a bowl game.

Today’s standard is 6 wins in 12 games – that’s just a stinking .500 record that doesn’t really deserve the reward of a bowl game. Heck, you have to win 7 games to make a bowl game. Now there is talk of allowing teams with a 5-7 record to play in the bold game because 6 wins is not enough to qualify.

This is nonsense. A fatal consequence of this is reward incompetence.

It reminds me of those parents who force their kid to play little league baseball when the kid could care less. He then plays 12 games on the team that loses each game and as a reward they give each boy on the team a trophy so that their feelings are not hurt by their incompetence.

Parents feel compelled to take pictures of their little “stars” and put up baseball cards as if they were some kind of big league player. how stupid A child learns that being zero counts for everything. He feels like nothing and is nothing.

He’s denied the blood, sweat, and tears to actually develop skills, learn to be a team player, and enjoy some real, real-life success—an even more valuable lesson that will serve him for the rest of his life.

Last year, 71 teams qualified for a bowl game by winning at least 6 games, and 68 of those teams played in a bowl game. This year, 64 teams are eligible for the bowl and could be 20 if they win again. The selection of balls will be announced on Sunday, December 5.

Unless someone in authority puts their foot down, we may soon see 60 bowl games with every major school. So one can make a lot of money, but the games will be terrible and the players will be cheated out of something important – the sense of achievement that comes from hard work and sacrifice and cannot be replaced.
