Four Fantasy Football Strategies That Will Help You Dominate Your Home Or Work League

If you want to dominate your home, friends, or work fantasy football league, this article will teach you three strategies that will help you win the big bucks! When I bring up a specific player, it’s more of an example than a suggestion, because anything can happen above field you Control what happens though!

These general strategies will ensure that you show up on draft day ready to dominate.

1. Rules and Scoring: Know the rules and scoring for your specific league. This is imperative. You must know the answers to all of the following questions:

  • How many people do you draft?
  • How much do you start each term?
  • Is this a points-per-reception (PPR) league?
  • Do return yards count?
  • How many points are there for a QB touchdown?
  • How many points can I lose for an interception?
  • Is this a keeper league?

You need to know these questions because all the answers will affect how you do your research and rank your choices. In PPR leagues, the value of WRs suddenly increases and so do pass catching running backs. Chris Johnson and Maurice Jones-Drew are probably more valuable than Adrian Peterson in a PPR league.

If your league is PPR and counts return yards, a guy like Reggie Bush will probably make a round or two earlier than a league without those rules. In many leagues QB’s get 4pts touchdowns. In a standard setup where they get 6pts a TD, they are definitely more valuable.

Some leagues even start two QBs, so you have to remember to take an extra QB. In fact, you should know all of your starting positions to ensure you get a quality starter at each position.

Youth and upside sometimes override production in keeper leagues. Sure you might be able to draft Cedric Benson, but wouldn’t Ryan Matthews have more upside for future years? These are the questions you want to ask yourself.

Once you understand the rules of your league, you can start researching players. If you’re in a PPR league instead of Google “2010 Fantasy Football Rankings”, try searching for “2010 Fantasy Football PPR Rankings”. Also use common sense, if you are in a league that has an emphasis on a specific skill set/position, players who bring that to the table will increase in value.

2. Research: Now you know how to start researching – do it. Make your own cheat sheets. Don’t just use Yahoo rankings. You can find free rankings in several places:

  • games.espn.go.com/frontpage/football
  • nfl.com/fantasy
  • fftoolbox.com/
  • fantasynews.cbssports.com/fantasyfootball
  • walterfootball.com/fantasy.php
  • bleacherreport.com/fantasy-football
  • sportingnews.com/fantasy/football
  • footballguys.com/

There are a few more sites to look at but they give you a good start. Go through as many of these rankings and build your own list with nothing but these above (or other) sites in mind.

Then go through that list and rearrange based on your league rules. Use common sense and more specific rankings (such as PPR rankings) to organize your original list.

Once you have that list, you can take it a step further by going into your goals. Read about the coaching changes:

  • The Saints’ defense got bigger last year after changing defensive coordinators.
  • The Jets had a good fantasy D with the arrival of Rex Ryan.
  • Can Matt Forte and Jay Cutler bounce back a few years under Martz?

You should do this step as close to your draft as possible. That way you can make adjustments for preseason injuries, hold outs or depth chart changes.

3. Draft Day Checklist: You’ve done your research and you’re heading to Drat Day, what do you bring?

  • Your cheat sheets: Use them as you just spent days creating them. This involves bringing up a large master list of all your ranked players. Keep your head in the game by highlighting everyone who passes.
  • The latest list of team depth charts: If you’re scrambling in the late rounds
  • List of handcuffs: These are the players that will gain fantasy value due to injuries to starters. If you have an injured player you can “handcuff” him to his replacement. If someone drafts an injured player, you want to stick his handcuffs on him.
  • List of players by week: You don’t want to take all of our bye weeks at once.
  • Blank list of everyone else’s teams: This can be huge, I always bring a list with everyone in the pool listed with positions under their name. I check when they occupy a certain position. This can be huge because if you realize everyone already has a starting QB you can stop your QB and increase depth elsewhere. If you take this step, you will be instantly ahead of the general public.
  • Drinks: Bring whatever drink you like. There is no problem in bringing a bottle of water even if you are drinking alcohol. Having water on hand may mean you need to keep your seat comfortable. I would avoid using that bottle to relieve myself though. That’s too far.
  • Arrive early: Come early to ensure you have a good seat. I know people who keep lawn chairs in the trunk of their car in case the homeowner runs out of space.
  • Bring a clipboard – There’s a good chance you won’t be at the table, so you better bring a clipboard. You will be made fun of, but it will help.
  • Different colored highlighters: This can be handy if you want to identify a potential sleeper or value for an upcoming pick. Also good to use to highlight your master list. You don’t want to scratch things in the fantasy draft.
  • In a sense of humor: You better bring your sense of humor because there will be a few hiccups along the way. There will be people like me who chirp about your choice. I am not above playing mind games. A little friendly badgering is always fun. You can try playing mind games to make sure that someone you want to pick isn’t drafted.
  • Bring your brain: Make sure you bring your brains too, which means you pick the last second defense and the last kicker.

4. Play the Apology Chord Smartly: Now that the draft is complete use the waiver wire properly. You should never waste your suit on a kicker or defense. Wait until the waiver wire ends (usually Wednesday) and then pick up a kicker or defense for a bye week or as a replacement. You only use your apology wire for people who can really improve your team. The perfect time is when a starter is injured and a quality backup is available.

These four strategies will put you head and shoulders above the average fantasy player. If you’re looking to dominate your work or home league, know your rules, do your research, prepare on draft day, and play the strings like a violin. Now that you’ve read this article, put it into practice and enjoy an exciting fantasy football season.
