PES 2013 – The Only Video Game For Footy Fans

PES 2013 by Konami will launch this fall on PS3, XBOX 360, Wii and PC, and if online buzz is to be believed, it will give FIFA 12 a run for its money this year. The PES franchise has been around for 16 years and has progressed through many iterations of the title and gameplay style, so what makes Pro Evolution Soccer so popular?

If you live in North America, this event will pass you by if you’re not a ‘soccer’ fan, but if you live in the rest of the world, especially in Europe, as every PES fan knows, the football season starts in August, but you’ll find your Own footy imaginations will get to play in October, when the latest and greatest version of PES hits video game shop shelves.

It all started back in the days of video games, actually 1996, when Round Storm was released on the PlayStation. Since then, PES has gone through several naming schemes and the latest update will be called PES 2013. It will continue the same as the previous 16 years with Electronic Arts (EA) and their masterpiece – FIFA (12). It’s really the two games that go for gamers’ hard cash every year and anything that makes the competition even fiercer.

We see that these two games have battled it out over the years and PES has a chance to come out on top again this year. Partly due to complacency, but the resurgence and apparent brilliance of FIFA has taken a back seat over the last 5 or 6 years.

The facts of the case are your honor;

FIFA (which stands for Fédération Internationale de Football Association) is, as the name suggests, an officially sanctioned football game, which means the game is complete with all real player names, team names, football kits, competition names and stadiums. PES never had these rights and had to rely on editing modes and the imagination of gamers who bought the game to recreate all of the above details, liveries and stadia. Not only has this grown a powerful online community with editing interests, but with the obvious game play advantages of PES you begin to see why the popularity of the game is still so high.

So what are the benefits of playing these games?

Well, the trade-off in licensing conditions has always been outweighed by the sheer beauty of playing PES – a game for footy fans. While actual game play has always more closely mirrored the actual game, FIFA has traditionally suffered in this area. PES was always fun to play in the early years, games were high scoring, but varied, FIFA always felt staged and the ball never behaved like real football, felt too floaty. In comparison, PES football always has weight and the challenges between players feel fleshed out.

The similarity between the two games is to think FIFA is a Premier League or Champions League setup, it looks slick and has endorsements coming out of its ears, but it’s not really real football, it’s a pre-packaged version. A game designed to trick glory hunting footy fans who shout about how great their team is without knowing anything about their own team’s history.

Pro Evo on the other hand are jumpers for the goal posts, dirty knees and eating soggy Cornish pasties on a cold, wet Tuesday night to Barnsley! The analogy can be lost on many and to some extent proves a point, football isn’t always flashy, lots of step-overs and pink Nike boots, it’s about teams outside the Premier League whose fans still flock to every home. And the away game, years have not seen his team win anything. That’s real football and that’s what Konami has tried to incorporate despite being in Japan.

By and large they have been successful, but the line between the two games has blurred in recent years. FIFA is now very close to adapting the whole ethos of PES, some say their game play is really good, I still disagree with that statement, but with the online patches now available to PES gamers they can fix and build on the licensing issues. Photo-realistic players, teams and kits – meaning the two games are on a collision course to meet in the middle.

Konami has delighted fans over the years by acquiring licensing rights to the England national team, two Premier League teams and various other leagues and players in Europe and around the world. This has undoubtedly helped, but give me a fake Man Red (Manchester United) and a quality game on the FIFA version of football any day. At the end of the day I buy football computer games because I like to play games that recreate beautiful games, FIFA does it well now, but PES does it better and I hope the next installment of PES 2013 will do it again. I have the option to lead the mighty Derby County to European glory!
