EPL Team Profile – Arsenal

The official name of the club is Arsenal Football Club or Arsenal FC. It is often referred to simply as Arsenal or by its nickname, the Gunners.

The club’s registered office is in Drayton Park, London and was founded in 1886 and was known as Dial Square at the time of its establishment.

Arsenal’s main venue is the recently built Emirates Stadium which has a seating capacity of around 60,000.

The club is owned by Arsenal Holdings plc and the chairman is Peter Hill-Wood. The players are coached by France’s manager, Arsene Wenger.

The squad includes the following players: Almunia, Clichy, Vermaelen, Koscielny, Diaby, Nasri, Ibo, Sagna, Wilshere, Arshavin, Chamakh, Fabianski, Rosicky, Robbie van Persie, Vela, Walcott, Song and Gibbs.

The new signings this season are Chamakh and Koscielny, while the players who have left are Gallas, Eduardo and Sol Campbell.

Arsenal have won 13 top division titles in English football, including 3 Premier League titles, the last in 2003–04.

In their opening match of the EPL 2010–11 on 14 August, Arsenal faced Liverpool and the match ended in a draw, luckily for Arsenal, Pepe Reina converted an own goal in the 90th minute, following a goalkeeping error by the Liverpool goalkeeper.

Pre-season preview

Arsenal’s summer has been dominated by the Cesc Fabregas story. Up until the week before the start of the Premier League, speculation was rife as to whether the Spain star would bid farewell to the club.

But there is now little doubt that Fabregas will stay at Arsenal, although not for more than a year and unlikely to be for five years, as claimed by club manager Arsene Wenger.

Other Arsenal players appear to be excited by Fabregas’ decision to continue with the club, as Arsenal consider themselves a promising prospect for the league title this year.

The last trophy the club won was in 2005, when they won the FA Cup.

Holland’s Robin van Persie could be the man to help Arsenal end their title drought. In the tradition of his predecessors at the club, Thierry Henry and Ian Wright, Van Persie’s goalscoring has been vital to the club’s success.

As long as the striker remains fit, opposing defenses will shudder at the prospect of playing against him.

Teenager Jack Wilshere has been selected by England coach Fabio Capello to play for the national team. Clearly, the young man has a bright future ahead of him and the current Premier League season could play a big role in turning Wiltshire into a capable international.

Every time Wiltshire starts for Arsenal, he will be the focus of those trying to gauge his potential as a future England player.

Arsene Wenger is clearly aware that this could be Fabregas’ last year with the club and wants to make sure he has the guns to make the championship dream a reality.

He rushed to sign up Marouane Chamakh just days after the transfer window opened. Another big purchase is defender, Laurent Koscielny.

Eduardo, William Gallas and Sol Campbell, the players who left, have expired. Eduardo, in particular, had a broken leg three years ago, and is still not fully recovered.

Arsenal will always reckon without winning the title. They will give the leaders a run for their money and in the final month or so they will be fighting for a place in the top four and Champions League contention.

And that’s a goal I think the Gunners will certainly achieve.
