FC Barcelona Successful Season Review 2010-2011

FC Barcelona started the 2010-11 season with a threat especially under Jose Mourinho as he knocked Barcelona out of the Champions League semi-finals last year with his unprecedented tactics. But Barca have once again proved their class by winning the double–the La Liga crown–with two games to spare three times in a row–and the big Champions League crown–twice in three years by teaching their opponents real good football. Without a lesson, Barca achieved a spectacular record of 28 matches unbeaten in the 2010–2011 Liga season and 16 league wins in a row. Barca is now about the “dream team”.

La Liga

Barca lost 2-0 in dramatic fashion at the Camp Nou in the second leg against new arrivals Hercules CF! It was a shock, not a fact, but Barça proved it in their next game. They won their third straight La Liga crown with two games to spare.

A series of “El Classicos”

Five “El Clasico” in one season and four of them occurred in a period of only 18 days in April-May. The only time in recent history the two giants met four times in a season was 2001-02, and I can’t recall a season with as many or as many ties before that.

1st“El Clasico” The season ended on November 29. Madrid’s new coach, their excellent performance in the league before this match, and the fatigue of the Spanish players after the World Cup were the major issues facing the game. But as soon as the referee blew the whistle to start the battle, it was none other than the Barca players who pulled off the beauty of football again. On the 111th birthday of the world’s best club, Barca wowed their fans with an unforgettable, five-star performance in a 5-0 win over their eternal rivals. With the win, Barca are top of the table, 8 points ahead of Madrid, and the lead remains as stable as Everest until the end of the season.

2nd“El Clasico” It was a 1-1 draw at the Santiago Bernabeu, with both Messi scoring against Mourinho for the first time and Ronaldo scoring against Barcelona since his arrival at the Santiago Bernabeu. After the match, Barça were eight points ahead of Madrid.

3rd“El Clasico” was in “Copa del Rey Final” So it was a big match for both of them. Mourinho stuck to his super defensive strategy and eventually got the win and the trophy while Ronaldo scored in the 102nd minute at the Mestalla. Barca had 70% of the first half but had no attempts before the goal post. Barca improved in the second half, they created chances but all went to waste and it was 0-0 after 90 minutes. Ronaldo then scored in the 102nd minute and that proved to be the deciding factor as Barça were unable to score but held on.

4 th “El Clasico” The much-awaited Champions League semi-final was on. The first leg was at the Santiago Bernabeu. Mourinho hits out at Pep Guardiola after Guardiola comments disqualify a goal Copa del Rey Final. Immediately after Mourinho left the press conference, Guardiola responded quickly and furiously as he used the “F word”. This incident added an extra spice before the battle. On the battlefield we saw a reflection of Guardiola’s anger as the Barca players all rushed towards the referee when any Madrid player committed a foul. Barcelona were playing their natural attacking game and Madrid stuck to their defensive scheme. After half time it was tied 0-0. When the two teams went to the dressing room, Barca’s spare goalkeeper Pinto received a red card and some players from both teams scuffled. On the hour mark Pepe fouled Dani Alves and the referee booked him with a straight red card – Barca’s plan worked. But we can easily see from the replay that it was a master piece by Dani Alves. Mourinho also received a red card for making an illegal gesture to the referee. Barca then took advantage of 10 men and Messi scored in the 76th minute and he doubled it in the 87th minute with pure magic and the latter was undoubtedly one of the best goals in Champions League history. A huge 2-0 lead after full-time and Barca were almost through to the final.

5th “El Clasico” It was a brutal formality as it was impossible to keep Barca away from Wembley with a 2-0 away goal advantage. It was a 1-1 draw at the Camp Nou. Barca scored first and Madrid equalized. Mourinho was not even in the gallery during the match. Barca were off to Wembley.

Champions League

It would be an injustice to Barcelona if I didn’t mention the match against Arsenal. Cesc Fabregas once again played for the losing side. Arsenal had a 2-1 home advantage but failed to capitalize on it at the Camp Nou where they were humiliated 4-1 last year with all the goals scored by Argentina’s little wizard Messi. Messi made the difference again this year, his first goal showing the world that his skills are limitless. Arsenal achieved an incredible record breaking record of over a thousand appearances in the Champions League. They couldn’t hit a single shot on target in this match! The score line was 3-1 and Sergio Busquets scored the only goal.

Champions League Final – Obviously, this is considered the biggest match of a season. Barca players labeled this match as the last Champions League final of their lifetime as Guardiola did the same at Wembley in 1992 where Barca won their first Champions League final trophy. Sir Alex Ferguson called it “the ultimate of the decade”. Some said it would be “DJ Woo” In the 2008–09 season others said ManU got better. When the match started Manu challenged Barca really well in the first ten minutes but then again the beauty of football was at its peak, Manu once again became a bus stander. The game ended 3-1 and it could have been a lot worse. The game is now regarded as the best Champions League final in terms of class of football by any team.

In the end, it was another successful mission for FC Barcelona. He achieved doubles and set some team and individual records this season. They are now very close to the “Dream Team” while some people have already expressed that they are the “Dream Team” or even better! But one thing is for sure, Lionel Messi is approaching and “Who is the best player, Pele or Maradona?” Stopping repeating this question.
