How to Deal With Bad Parents on Your Youth Football Team

I used to wonder how some people could always be jerks. I have come to the conclusion that there are only bad people in this world. I assume they live miserable lives, have crappy jobs, and are “glass half empty” types of people. These people look to make everyone else miserable, and as the coach of a youth football team, you become the primary target.

Just because some jerk can’t last his life or the job doesn’t give him/her the right to disrespect you, you’re coaching staff or your youth football team. These parents are never satisfied. They criticize everything from the crime you commit to the way you run your practice. You need to have a game plan when one of these jerks tries to harass you.

Most of the time, it has nothing to do with you, but the parents having issues with the parents of some of the other kids on the team. Second-sport struggles begin to seep into your youth football team.

First, have a zero tolerance policy for all parents. Make sure you set the rules at parent youth football meetings. Let them know what is not allowed at practice and games. Tell them when they can contact you and when it’s not a good time. I’ve had nut jobs make an appearance at a game or disrupt an entire practice. I always make myself available before and after practice for any questions.

Second, let parents know there will be consequences if they don’t listen. Don’t make threats just state the facts. You have to make sure that your youth football administration supports you. My favorite outcome is playtime for their child. Bigger mouths don’t close quickly. You need to contact the youth football administration again and if it is ok then sit the player down. Unfortunately, it comes with some stupid people.

Third, ban them from all football competitions. Ban them if the situation goes beyond accommodating their child. I’ve watched dad’s youth football games in his car parking lot. His choice since he knows he can’t bite his tongue.

Fourth, file charges with local authorities. I have only been bullied once in over 20 years but it just takes a nut job and who knows what will happen. Be prepared to get the authorities involved if someone makes verbal or verbal threats.

I know we have covered some really serious cases but you can expect some parents to challenge you for various reasons. As the head coach of a youth football team, you need to be prepared for how to handle this.
