NFL Reviews Week 13

Philadelphia over Houston. Michael Vick continued his push toward MVP with another solid performance. The Eagles with all their skill and speed on offense held themselves to 34 points with two more dropped touchdown passes and cruised into the 3rd quarter allowing the Texans to get back into the game. The bad news for the Eagles is that Vick was hit hard by a defense considered the weakest in the league. Vick isn’t the biggest quarterback in the league, but he’s tougher than he looks, but he’s gotten up slowly after being hit so many times. The good news for him and the Eagles is that they have ten days to ice the concussions and injuries, and coach Andy Reid to find a way to mitigate Vick’s punishment. The Eagles need a healthy Vick for the stretch run.

The Texans also have an explosive offense but their defense has been their Achilles heel all season. That would be the reason for not winning the division. The Texans have Andre Johnson and he’s so nervous right now that even angry Eagles fans were seen paying him before the game to pay for last weeks fine.

Pittsburgh over Baltimore. The Steelers won a game that was as tough and brutal as advertised. It was like old school football where anything went. Ben Roethlisberger just won a world title after playing through a broken bone in his foot and breaking and twisting his shin early in the first quarter. Aha! Not to mention he had to battle a bloodthirsty Terrell Suggs throughout the game. The Steelers overcame injuries, poor officiating, (Ben was hit in the head and Miller was knocked unconscious, no personal foul penalty was called) and overpowered the Ravens’ defense to take over the division. Troy Polamalu’s sack and strip was the game’s turning point. Polamalu’s ability to make these kinds of plays is unreal. The Crows didn’t see him coming. Isaac Redman’s catch and breaking tackle was also huge. The Steelers’ resolve kept them in the game until their bigs made big plays.

The Ravens blew a chance to take control of the division and earn a potential first-round bye for the playoffs. They battered and bled Roethlisberger throughout the game. I’m not sure the Steelers would have ever scored a touchdown if Joe Flacco hadn’t fumbled after Polamalu’s hit. It’s easy in hindsight but how did Polamalu not see the Ravens lurking at the line of scrimmage? It’s so easy to switch to the other side in a running play. It was second and five. In those circumstances there was no reason to pass. Also Flacco short-armed a fourth-and-two pass. The receiver was open. You cannot miss those opportunities. I can’t fault Harbaugh’s decision not to attempt a 48 yard field goal because of the wind and cold. I can only fault the execution on the pass. Now it’s likely the Ravens hit the road for the playoffs and it won’t be easy. The good news is that their defense will keep them in road games.

Dallas, edge of Indianapolis. The Cowboys won a game they would have lost earlier in the season. They made key plays when it was too much and got a huge break when the Colts were penalized for using leverage on a drive late in the fourth. This allowed the Cowboys to score the touchdown they needed. Tushard Choice controlled the clock with a rushing lead of over two hundred yards and got the turnovers they needed. John Kitna was solid and didn’t turn the ball over. Even disgraced kicker David Buehler made the clutch kick in overtime.

The Colts desperately needed this game and didn’t get it. Being down 17-0 is never good. The Colts had no running game and Peyton Manning’s four interceptions cost them the game again. Manning is pressing and his footwork is terrible. He often drops his toes and doesn’t see the whole field. He is also taking wrong decisions. Even with Manning’s error-prone game, the Colts had a chance to win. The field goal attempt penalty was as big as Manning’s four interceptions. The Colts now face an uphill battle to make the playoffs.

Chicago over Detroit. The Bears just find a way to win close games. It’s just their year. The Lions just find a way to lose close games. This is not their century.

Green Bay over San Francisco. The Packers won a game in one of the ugliest uniforms in NFL history. They should be burned immediately. The 49ers haven’t beaten a cold weather team since Joe Montana became the quarterback.

Kansas City over Denver. The Chiefs were almost caught looking ahead but escaped with the win. The Broncos have now proven they can lose even the boring ones.

Tampa Bay above Atlanta. The Falcons and Matt Ryan rallied to win another close game. The Buccaneers were in control of the game until the Falcons’ kickoff return for a touchdown caused 11 players to miss tackles due to their old school orange jerseys.

New Orleans Coast Cincinnati. The Saints are so explosive on offense, but they needed the Bengals to do something that had never happened before. “Pull you aside with a hard snap count” trick.

The New York Giants beat Washington. The Giants did what they wanted on offense and defense. The Redskins were ineligible in every way except for a timely appearance.

Minnesota Blasting Buffalo. The Vikings proved they can win without Brett Farvey. But Furvey also had a spirit-making Tarvaris Jackson throw interception. The Bills finally had a non-gut wrenching loss and looked comfortable in the process.

Cleveland Beach Miami. This is the first time this season that the Browns have won two games in a row. Too bad the win over Miami isn’t what the city of Cleveland really wants. The Dolphins are now on their way to an all-time terrifying 500 season.

Oakland over San Diego. The Chargers beat the Raiders in what many thought was an improbable game since the Chargers hadn’t lost in December since 2005. The Chargers may have spent the week checking out the housing market in Los Angeles.

Seattle over Carolina. The Seahawks’ victory kept the Seahawks’ goal of a bowl berth intact. The Panthers hope the season ends today so they can have the first pick in the draft.

St. Louis over Arizona. The Rams finally snapped their losing streak against the Cardinals. Cardinals coach Whisenhunt is realizing it’s hard to win when your quarterback is Kurt Warner
