Beating Teams That All-Out Blitz In Youth Football – Offensive Line Tricks

Are all youth football leagues competitive?

First of all, let me start by saying that 95% of the people who e-mail me say they are in a very competitive league. The problem is that 95% of us don’t play in a competitive league and many have no context outside of their league. Most teams don’t play outside tournaments, play in outside tournaments, or travel out of town to play, how do they know if they are playing in a truly competitive league? That’s why I always try and schedule at least 2 league games against teams from 2 different leagues as well as out-of-town tournaments if parents agree to raise money. Don’t panic because someone says or you think you play in a competitive league, it doesn’t matter if your youth football league is not “competitive” but the competition is relative.

My teams have played in leagues where teams from our league have won the National Unlimited Select National Title (Top Gun Division) in Daytona, Florida, which is considered the most competitive tournament in the country. The league has produced Dave Rimington (Outland), Ahman Green (NFL), Eric Crouch (Heisman) and countless others. We have won many out-of-town tournaments in various age groups and have always done well against outside competition. We can play “competitive” teams, in fact we have a lot of time for teams to adapt to those games these days. My system has been used successfully by hundreds of youth football coaches ages 6-14 and was just one point away from winning the Jr. Pee Wee Pop Warner National Championship in Florida last year.

So in short, yes the single wing no splits system works in competitive leagues in the age group you are coaching and against the tactics you mentioned. Just because all the teams in this youth football league in the example above use a vulnerable but aggressive defensive tactic doesn’t mean they are somehow well-coached or “competitive”. Competitive can be a descriptive word to describe the mental nature of this coaching staff but to be “competitive” one must have the ability. I think the opposite would be true, if all the defenses in this league were the same and they all used the same offensive tactics every game. Those defenses and this youth football league seem too predictable and too easy to beat with any reasonable amount of competent coaching. We often see this in youth football tournaments, the beasts in the XYZ league who have held hands with everyone in their league but who get the cream of the crop in out-of-state tournaments. They play in a league where there is little “outside the box” thinking and many teams are intimidated by inappropriate but aggressive tactics. You’d be surprised how much these bully teams struggle when faced with a trained team or a team that isn’t afraid of such tactics.

Crush the blitzing team

By not defending the whole area and having all the defenders tight and every down, there is no level of defensive pressure. A simple wedge play is usually effective against such teams, even if they have 10 men on the line of scrimmage. Once the starting line of defense is breached, it’s usually a huge advantage to tight splits like we use negative defensive pressure in this way, and many plays look like a scene from the movie “The 3003”.

We like to use aggressiveness against them using the “no play” against them and mess with their blitz timing and run a lot of trap plays, screens, tight end dump passes (off-tackle fakes) and straight ahead off-tackle runs. Runs that don’t work are straight sweeps, deep reverses, and deep drop back passes, the football play many youth football coaches run without regard to the effectiveness of the play. The right run is almost always effective against these types of defenses, and something the offense does very well.

Motion gives you a lot of advantages against teams like this and either defends against an all-out blitz or gets you a wide, flat or screen play. We have also been able to jet sweep many of these teams. I enjoy playing youth football teams like this with lots of bravado, makeup and jumping up and down, but usually with their tails between their legs. They get very frustrated when they don’t get a bunch of negative yardage plays off the bat or scare the offense. Obviously I’m not a fan of this back yard tactic, it only works against the poorest and least prepared youth football teams. You never see this type of defense in big tournaments, those teams always bounce back early.

What your team needs to defeat this trick is confidence in your execution based on completing a base set of complementary plays in football practice and running everything north and south. A really well-coached team would have a field day with this type of defense. You can do that effectively without a big or dominant offensive line in youth football.
