The Impossible Dream
What would you dare to dream if you knew you wouldn’t fail? A few weeks ago I was watching the NFL draft. It is an annual event where the best college football players in America are selected by the NFL to play professional football at the highest level. One player in particular stood out to me as I watched it. He was six feet five inches tall and weighed two hundred and sixty-five pounds. This was a big tough guy! That’s why his response to being selected caught my attention. He started crying! He was so emotional that he could not stand his name. What will make this tough guy cry? He had fulfilled the impossible dream.
He had this dream since childhood. It was a dream that kept him awake at night. It was a dream he thought about every day. What is your impossible dream? I have discovered that all impossible dreams have one thing in common. To achieve that you have to overcome what I call “staggering statistics”. A surprising statistic because often on the journey to your dreams you meet a large number of people who aspire to you. This large group becomes a shocking statistic. For example, there are 9,000 people who play college football at the highest level. Only 215 of those 9,000 will be drafted in the NFL. This is a shocking statistic. You may dream of becoming the CEO of a Fortune 500 company. The average Fortune 500 company has more than 100,000 employees but only one CEO. This is a shocking statistic. So the question becomes how can I achieve my impossible dream and beat the amazing statistics? I will share with you two things you need to make your dream come true. This is what I call the “two rights” of dream fulfillment.
The first rule of dream fulfillment is the right philosophy. The right philosophy is the belief that all things are possible. The right philosophy is essential because staggering statistics will make your dream impossible. The key to having the right philosophy is knowing and embracing your purpose. Your purpose is what makes your dreams possible. We are all born with a destiny and a purpose to fulfill it. You are the only one who can achieve your specific purpose. Knowing and mastering your purpose will get you to the front of the line and allow you to beat amazing statistics. It reminds me of an experience I had when I was at the airport trying to catch an early flight. I arrived at the terminal only to find several people ahead of me trying to do the same thing as me. I was sure I was going to miss my flight! Then I saw my good friend Paul at the front of the line. He beckoned me to come forward. We hugged, he released me in front of him and I took my flight. Our purpose is like that of my friend Paul. When you realize that and embrace it, you’ll put yourself at the front of the line and ahead of others trying to do what you’re doing. Knowing and embracing your purpose will allow you to achieve the right philosophy.
Another right to dream fulfillment is the right attitude. The right approach would be to choose a mentor who has done what you are trying to do. Finding a good mentor has two benefits. First, you benefit directly from a mentor’s experience and perspective. Secondly, they will help you change your perspective. This is important because sometimes our delayed dreams have a direct effect on our failure to change them. I was reminded of a YouTube video the other day of a blind man who was homeless and begging on the street. In front of it was a sign that read “Help, I’m blind.” People used to walk past him everyday without paying him. This became a consistent pattern. One day, a woman wakes up, turns her sign around and writes something on it and leaves. Suddenly, people would read what she wrote and pay. His cup was now full of money. I watched this video in amazement and I asked myself; “What’s on that sign?” Suddenly, the camera pans to a sign that reads “It’s a beautiful day, and I can’t see it.” The woman was an effective guide for the blind man as she helped him change his perspective. Once he changed his perspective, he could change his outcome. When you have the right attitude, you will get closer to your dreams.
The first right to dream fulfillment is the right philosophy, the second right is the right attitude. As I close I am reminded of the story of a young man named Craig that brings these two points home. Craig had a difficult childhood. He spoke with a lisp and slurred his words. He was constantly teased by other children for the way he spoke. Then things went from bad to worse for Craig. When he was ten years old, he was told by his father’s friend that he sounded like Daffy Duck when he spoke and that he should be quiet. The incident had a dramatic effect on him and he tried his best not to speak in public. Well, this sad story has a happy ending. In 1999 Craig won the Toastmasters International World Championship of Public Speaking and today Craig Valentine is a successful motivational speaker who speaks around the world. What was the secret of Craig’s success? First, he had the right philosophy. Craig had a dream of winning the world title and believed that it was possible even though everyone made fun of him. Second, he had the right attitude. Craig wanted to become a world champion so he chose a mentor who was a previous world champion. Guru helped him change his perspective, overcome amazing statistics and realize his dream. I have good news for you today. If it worked for Craig, it will work for you. If you have the right philosophy and the right attitude, you can make the impossible dream come true.
