For the sake of this article I have included 2 hard hitting speed developing drills to cover the strength portion of your football strength training program. In order to generate significant speed and power for the game of football you must engage in intense explosive lifts that challenge your body from head to toe to trigger a rapid response from your body’s nervous system. As a professional I can tell you that there is no better way to do that than to incorporate kettlebell training into your football workouts. Check out the 2 kettlebell drills below that I’ve included for you here.

1. Kettlebell Swing: This particular kettlebell lift is one of the most basic strength endurance lifts you can do with ancient kettlebells to build tremendous core strength, endurance and overall speed! The reason this particular lift is so effective is that it involves using hundreds of your muscles at once to pull it off correctly. This lift engages so many of your muscles at once that you’ll be incredibly challenged from a starting set of just 20 or 30 reps with even moderately heavy bells. See yourself forcefully lifting the bell as a pendulum from between your feet to chest level. This arch like swinging motion requires you to use your large core muscle groups including your hips, abs, back, shoulders and everything in between. This exercise is great for grinding and conditioning the muscles in your posterior chain (like your glutes, hamstrings, lower back) that are part of your sprinting powerhouse!

2. Kettlebell Snatch: This particular kettlebell lift is very dynamic in nature and is more effective in developing your fast twitch muscle fibers which are essential for your football speed performance. This football strength training drill is performed with a single kettlebell. To execute the lift you must pull the bell vertically from the floor or between your feet and hold it in a smooth powerful motion to a position above your head. When pulling the bell you must engage your hips and knees in a technique called a hip snap. This is known as the high pull condition. Once you lift the bell into this position, you should complete the lift by punching your palms vertically toward the sky to lock them overhead. This explosive action will help you develop some serious football speed for your game day performance.
