Want to Play Extraordinary Golf?

Before you start a round of golf with your friends, think about what you usually do. Are you driving your kids across town to soccer practice? Are you still having trouble sleeping due to a poor night’s rest? Are you happy with all 6 cups of coffee? Are you scared as a cat in a room full of rocking chairs because you’re dribbling balls? You’re no doubt in a bit of a mood before you start your round of golf. And often, I’m willing to bet my Ben Hogan autographed book that it’s the wrong frame of mind.

I know your life is busy. But the key is to get into the right frame of mind before stepping onto the first tee box. How do you do this? Well, let me just say that it’s not always easy and it takes practice to get into the right frame of mind. So don’t get frustrated or discouraged if it takes a while. Remember this is a game and it should be fun. Why would you be out paying big bucks to hit a tiny white ball into a tiny tin cup?

The first thing is to find out where your head is at least half an hour before starting your round. Are you mad at your boss, frustrated with the kids? Have you ever had a fight with your partner or some crazy person tried to run you off the road? Are you having trouble picking up the ball or playing with your friends for big bucks? Any and all of these things affect you and your game. The pros know this and you need it too.

So, what can you do to get into the right frame of mind? For me, it’s important to be relaxed, confident and have positive energy flowing through my body. You can be a little different. My question to you is how did you feel inside when you played your best round of golf? Think about it and go back to that time and place. All is well with the world for you, isn’t it? But what if they were right? What feelings did you have? were you relaxed Were you confident? Was it fun? Are you confident in your golf swing? Were you enjoying your golf partners?

Here are some things I noticed when I played my best rounds:

“I felt excited playing and in the back of my mind I must have been nervous

“I enjoyed playing golf with my friends and didn’t worry that they would laugh at me if I cut the ball.

“I felt a stillness within that could not be shaken

“I felt confident, energized and happy walking out onto the golf course among the tree lined and beautifully manicured greens.

“I felt relaxed and joked with my golfing partners

“I felt the magic of being alive and I knew instinctively that I was going to hit the golf ball perfectly.

“My mind was not clouded with a million thoughts; instead there was focus and stillness

“My body felt relaxed, rested and healthy

“For lack of a better word, I was in the zone

Let’s say you’re an anxious wreck with eighteen million thoughts, mostly negative, rattling around in your head. How do you get from point A, the worry wart, to point B, the focused golfer? Again, if this is your normal position before you play a round of golf, don’t expect it to change overnight. It is a process.

First, identify what is ideal for you. Are you usually rushing home from work to play golf and where else is your mind? Or is it that you are struggling with your game and fear is almost paralyzing you? It is important to know your state of mind before you play golf. I don’t mean to say that everything is mental on you but golf is a mental game! There is no cure-all golf gizmo or one perfect way to swing a club. Even so, your mind will interfere.

If you’re having trouble identifying how you’re feeling or how you’re feeling before a round of golf, your first step is to pay attention to yourself. This can be difficult to do. Sometimes we get so busy with our daily lives that we don’t have time to stop and look at ourselves. One way to find out what your feeling or thinking is is to be silent for 5 minutes. Listen and learn.

I’ve noticed that I usually play a bad round of golf when I’m tired, nervous, or in a rush. I’ve reached a point in my game where I can usually shake that feeling or state of mind before the round starts. And you will learn to do this too with some practice. I still feel challenged when I feel out of sync or rhythm. It was as if some disaffected teenager had taken over my body and ruined my game. These are the rounds where I just do my best to stay centered and play safe. I know I won’t be breaking any records but I also know I won’t be spending days in the woods hunting for my golf balls!

Here are some ideas on how to get into a different state of mind:

Listen to your favorite music

Pay attention to your golf partners

Do something nice for someone else

Sing or hum a tune

Imagine your best round of golf

Think of the best memories of your life

Talk to a good friend

Tell a joke

smile

meditate

Imagine mastering challenging holes

Walk the course and take in your beautiful surroundings

Think of a time when you felt most confident

So how do you transition from one state, to a more relaxed calm state? It’s happened a few times when I’m running 90mph before a game of golf and my mind keeps pace with my body. I know that if I keep that pace, my golf game will suffer. I use whatever tactic seems to work at that moment. Deep breathing is always a good start. Swinging my club with a slow easy motion between my fingertips can calm and build tempo. Taking in the beauty of a golf course can be relaxing and uplifting, especially if I’m stuck in a traffic jam. You have to practice what works for you. One thing that always gets me in the zone is replaying one of my best rounds in my mind with my emotions. I can’t help but smile and feel good.
