Is Tom Brady REALLY the MVP So Far?

I know I know. I’m mad for even asking the question. How can a guy who is only fast enough to eclipse the single-season mark for TDs not be MVP and undefeated? Only one who has personal enmity against that person can think otherwise. One has to be a die-hard Ohio State Buckeye fan, or hate the QB that appears in GQ magazines, or hate any player who plays for Darth Hoodie to entertain the idea that Tom Brady doesn’t deserve MVP.

Well, as I stand here today (well, actually sitting here) none of the above three. I love the Wolverines and I don’t begrudge the GQ Club or anyone who plays for the obnoxious presence of Bill Belichick. So now that we’re on the same page, allow me to explain to you why Tom Brady is not the MVP of the NFL so far this season.

Yes, Tom Brady will be statistically the best player not only this season, but probably all time. Yes, he’ll at least finish the season 14-2, with a chance at perfection entirely in sight. But do these two things and he will be MVP. This kind of controversy happens every year in baseball. Does having the craziest stats mean you’re the most valuable player in all of your sports? A-Rod just won the American League MVP. Was it just because he put up numbers like Mantle and Ruth? No. Because he single-handedly led the Yankees to the playoffs. Take away A-Rod, and the Yankees can’t make the playoffs.

So this brings me back to my point. I will say it boldly. To this point in the NFL season, having just completed Week 12, Brett Favre is the NFL MVP. Just to endure some more ridicule, let’s look at a brief statistical comparison.

Touchdowns: Brady-39, Favre-22.

Yards: Brady-3,439, Favre-3,356.

Interceptions: Brady-4 (are you kidding me?), Favre-8

Passer Rating: Brady-127.9, Favre-101.5

Why, after this near-embarrassing statistical comparison, and knowing that Tom Brady is probably the quarterback who is going to lead his team to a perfect season, do I think Brett Favre is the old man’s MVP? Thanks for asking. I’ll tell you why. Let’s look at some important points that should not be overlooked. We’ll start easy. Tom Brady has a team around him. There are players around Brett Favre. Brady has a team, and a hell of a team on that note. After the quietest steal in NFL history in terms of trade, he has the most gifted receiver in the NFL. His 2nd receiver could be #1 on many teams. Wes Welker, #3, could be #1 or even #2 on many teams. The tandem of Maroney and Morris, though nothing short of amazing lately, has provided a sound running game. Add to that the fact that Brady is protected by the Great Wall of China along with his offensive line and you have all the pieces for success. I’m not discounting his success. He’s an amazing quarterback. But remember he is playing for an amazing team. He is a product of his own talent, but also of the incredible talent around him.

Brett Favre, on the other hand, is a product of nothing more than himself. Please name me 4 starters in the Packers offense not named Brett Favre or Donald Driver. You can read about the Patriots wide receiver trio, their tight ends, running backs, etc. Brett Favre is almost playing himself. He’s developing a star in a kid named Greg Jennings, and for the past few weeks he’s had the equivalent of a high school running back. Despite all of this, despite the lack of talent around him, the lack of play around him until the recent rise of Ryan Grant, we have an aging quarterback doing absolutely incredible things.

And now let’s look at another reason why Brett Favre and Tom Brady aren’t the current MVPs. Take the fact that the Patriots are the best team in the NFL and add to that the fact that their schedule hasn’t been perfect, let’s just say, frightening. Tell me if this line of detractors seems intimidating to you. Buffalo Bills (twice), New York Jets, Miami Dolphins, Cleveland Browns, Cincinnati Bengals. Anyone else shivering? Didn’t think so. The only real defense they’ve played this season is Indy and maybe San Diego (although they can’t defend anyone lately). On the other hand, the Packers have played these teams: Eagles, Giants, Chargers, Vikings (twice), Bears, @Denver, @Kansas City and Carolina. I said it in my previous post, but I don’t believe anyone in the league will have a tougher schedule defensively than they have so far. And yet Brett Favre has almost single-handedly led his team to a 9-1 record.

Add all these factors together, and it makes one thing clear; MVP. Most Valuable Player. Brett Favre, in terms of value to his team, is currently the best player in the National Football League. Let the hate emails and comments continue.
