Helmet to Helmet: Head Banging in the NFL

With a rash of helmet-to-helmet injuries in the NFL [National Football League], the powers-that-be are reevaluating the rules of the game. Some say that professional football is a spartan game, that men are men and therefore let players play without protective constraints. Others say it’s becoming too dangerous and restrictions on helmet-to-helmet collisions are needed to keep players safe in the game.

Discussion is good. However, some questions can certainly be asked beyond the rules of the game:

Question #1: How is a “game” defined?

Question #2: What defines true masculinity?

Professional football is a tough and tough game, no doubt. But at the end of the day, football is just a game, not a war. Should civilized societies allow the rules of sports to permanently injure or attempt to injure others? Sports and their participants are competitive, but should they encourage violence to such an extent that it negatively affects the lives of the players and the future of their families? When games allow such excessive and harmful violence, games cease to be games and become war. Are wars the fabric of civilized society or uncivilized?

Another issue of professional football is ‘masculinity’. What is masculinity? One definition includes being fierce, tough, strong and courageous. No doubt these are admirable features, but to what extent should they be implemented?

If a man is truly strong and courageous, shouldn’t his strength and courage be used to control his ability to hurt or permanently injure others, potentially destroying the careers of injured athletes in the process? If a man is truly a man and spends his life playing a game… a game… shouldn’t he be tough and professional enough to control his passions?

In short, when sports permit the destruction of physical capabilities that negatively affect the personal health and economic stability of its players, including the well-being of their families, are they still “sports” or something else? And when a man intentionally tries to injure another man under the “game of the game” in total disregard and disrespect not only for the other player and his welfare, but for the game itself, doesn’t he cease to be a man and become more? of an animal? Games are games right? Should they be relegated to so-called “sports” like the ancient Coliseum in Rome, or more sane and civilized spectator competitions for the entertainment and enjoyment of all without the unpleasant and demeaning pain and suffering of personal and professional destruction of life and well-being?
