Living a Purposeful Life
As a personal trainer I am amazed and yet how often I meet people who no matter their age, station in life; Their position, the power they have, the influence and money they have, who they are and by extension the purpose or meaning of their lives or the very essential reason for their existence are all out of touch.
As I have said earlier in this bulletin, life is a journey (process) and not a destination (outcome). It is implied here that if we always tell ourselves the truth and take responsibility for our lives, we will be valued and therefore will have a lifetime of learning and in the process a greater understanding of who we are and are becoming and where our purpose lies. To live in this complex world we have created.
How we choose to learn is critical to our development of what Maslow identified as the highest order needs; “Self-actualization,” or the meaning of one’s life? We have options here; We can take life as it comes, or decide to take as much control as the forces of nature will allow us and approach it strategically, accelerating our personal growth in the process.
As a personal trainer, maybe your personal trainer one day, I can help and guide you strategically at any stage of your life.
I have a surprising story to tell considering my early life experience.
When I think back to my high school days I remember feeling a little jealous of the kids who knew what they wanted to be when they grew up! They were unsure about what came after high school; What they will take at university, what they will do afterwards and where they will do it. I, on the other hand, had no clue. Being a romantic and something of a dreamer, I had so many different ideas, thoughts and feelings running through my head but nothing seemed to stick!
So finally, I did the right thing and tried to become an accountant because, my father was one and I was sure he wanted me to be one. At the end of my first year in Registered Industrial Accounting, I believe I got the worst marks in the program’s history! I can only imagine what my father thought. I never asked! So much for being an accountant.
There were other stops and starts along the way until I “stumbled” into the field of personnel and industrial relations in the 70’s. I found my way! In the years that followed I raised my first family, studied at university in the evenings, worked in human resource management, training and development, addictions, staff support, organizational development and also found time to coach football in the community. During this time I began to experience greater self-awareness, alignment with what I was doing in my life and process, and based on my education and especially what I was experiencing in my life, both good and bad. Accepting yourself for who you are, and having a purpose in your life are essential ingredients for success, health, and happiness. I sometimes like to call it symptoms of coming right!!
The struggles of my life are your struggles, a journey we share together. I have come to a place of knowing and understanding who I am becoming because of what my life has presented me with and what I have strategically pursued, and especially knowing that life and my efforts are leading me to my purpose or goal. . The place I found myself today. Oh yes, there are still mistakes but less, there are still occasional stressful days but I take them with the understanding that they will pass, I still sometimes have to apologize for my behavior, I forget more than I used to, I don’t even listen but I sometimes have insight and wisdom That being said, I still worry about whether I did the right thing for my children as they grow up and I still experience some sadness as I struggle with life but with discipline and philosophical perseverance it will all pass.
Oh, and by the way, while progressing down this path, I realized a while ago that I don’t need to be so jealous of my old school friends. They may know what they want to do after high school but like me, they are no longer in touch with who they are and what their purpose in life is. It comes much later, if at all!
Just remember that you can only be your best with your family, friends, employer and community by knowing and accepting yourself and fulfilling your life’s purpose.
Have a great summer, you certainly deserve it.
