My Time At Camp Walt Whitman – An American Kids Camp

During my four years at university I had to earn money to go through the summer months but I hated the fact that I couldn’t travel. A friend I met on a previous trip worked as a cabin counselor at an American kids camp one summer and told me that during this time you got all their food and lodging for free and after camp you could travel to the states. . Not only was your accommodation free, they also paid for your flight to and from.

It sounded like the perfect solution, free flights, food and accommodation and the opportunity to travel – what more could I ask for? After further investigation I applied for a cabin counselor position and was accepted at a camp called Walt Whitman. This beautiful camp in the middle of the New Hampshire country was made up of log cabins and a large hall for indoor activities. Where the main mess hall used to be you will look over the pool which we used for various activities like swimming and sailing. It was simply stunning.

The camp was a Jewish camp run by Bill and Nancy Dorfman and had been in the family for years. Their main focus was on sports and the camp included many different activities including basketball, tennis, baseball, swimming and football. some. Our job as cabin counselors was to take care of a small group of children (usually 7 or eight in total) and take them to all the different activities planned for that particular day. There were three cabin counselors in each cabin and my children were only seven or eight years old.

Getting everyone up to our cabin in the morning was a challenge as the kids didn’t like the beginning, but with a little persuasion they eventually came around. We all went to the mess hall for breakfast, which is always crowded. With a full stomach it was time for the morning meeting and catching up on any news. It was a daily ritual at the flagpole immediately after the flag was raised, Americans love their flags.

Taking care of so many children (I think there were 1000 in total) and planning their days was a huge undertaking and the owners spent the entire time before the camp started organizing every last detail. We had set activities for each day, on a roster so that there was no confusion. Our job was to get the kids to the next activity on time and in one piece which was not an easy task in my opinion. Even though our kids were very good, you got some who couldn’t do anything but complain, I don’t want to do that, I’m so tired, I don’t like it, I hate you, some of them were complaints and sure enough we always laughed. Let’s just say you’ll love it if you give it some time because the kids will collapse in a heap on the floor and refuse to move. You will certainly learn to be very patient when dealing with small children, but the rewards far outweigh the struggles.

Along with games, children could do all kinds of crafts including woodworking, needlework, clay modeling, painting and more. On Saturday we all barbecued on a big open fire (done in shifts due to population) and after everyone ate we went to the dance hall for our line dancing session with Mrs. Dorfman Sr. on the microphone. Guiding us every step of the way. Our kids never enjoyed dancing but the counselors loved it and would be there for hours.

In addition to daily camp activities, each cabin will depart their stay for an overnight camping adventure and participate in regular hiking days once a week, exploring the local New Hampshire country side. Older children would go away for days on either hiking trips or mountain biking adventures and were given more privileges because of their age. Overall the camp was set in a beautiful location with fantastic facilities and provided an incredibly full and active summer for all the children who were able to take part. My time at Walt Whitman was great and I really got an insight into how American kids see the world, we’re really not that different, maybe just a little.
