The Unforgettable Dinner Party – A Short Story
I should have been in a much better mood, by all means, but I was not a happy camper. Not at all. Black tie affairs are not my thing and this was the blackest of black tie affairs. The room was full of politicians and movers and shakers and nobody knew me. Mainly because I’m not a money taker. Sure enough, I was sitting in the lap of luxury surrounded by the powerful and distinguished. I was served imported caviar and smoked oysters wrapped in aged prosciutto, sipping a fine Riesling served in real crystal. We were between courses, waiting on the show stopper, the main course, pan seared salmon with sun-dried tomatoes, fresh buffalo mozzarella and some French sauce that, if you gave me a tutor I couldn’t pronounce, explained what was fun. If I was born in Paris and my life depended on it, pronouncing an e is actually something I’m expected to do.
I was miserable.
I would have been more than happy to eat hot wings in jeans, bib somewhere at a sports bar because the sauce in the wings will make you look like a grease monkey when you suck the meat off the bones. Cold beer in hand, watching endless pre-game shows leading up to the Super Bowl.
That’s what got me into this mess, the Super Bowl. It was the mighty Pittsburgh Steelers and their big quarterback, Ben Roethlisberger, against the cardiac kid Cardinals led by aging veteran Kurt Warner. My old platonic friend Steve had a few game tickets and 5 days of Super Bowl parties and endless fun and we’ve been friends for twenty years and he couldn’t find a real date to hold hands so he decided to take me on the vacation of a lifetime. I agreed. why not I knew Steve from school. We were always close. Superbowl week in Tampa Bay. Sun & Fun and the NFL’s biggest game are shared with a few million people in the Tampa-St. Pete area. Beaches, people in bathing suits, sun, parties and memories that will last a lifetime.
At least, that was the idea.
But instead of eating hot wings and attending loud, screaming parties, we were at a fundraising dinner for the governors the night before the Great Game. As people flooded the city streets, getting wild and having fun, I waited for some delicate fish drowning in a French sauce that I couldn’t pronounce and definitely didn’t want to eat. Instead of talking about the Cardinals’ beefy D-line chasing Big Ben around the gridiron, I was listening to boring, mind-numbing conversations about budget discrepancies and proprietary fund grants studying the mating habits of swamp moths. Instead of meeting a Latino boyfriend and dancing the night away, I was thinking of ending it all with a ball point pen through the eyes so I could get out of trouble. Beyond the fence of the gate guarded by security guards who were having more fun than I was, there was a commotion outside the sculpted, elderly double doors.
Don’t get me wrong, I appreciate culture and class. The art on the walls of the grand dining room was breathtaking and probably priceless. The long table was antique and the setting was ornate. You couldn’t get better service at a 5 star resort. But this adventure was meant to be. an escape. A once-in-a-lifetime, exciting escape from the hectic reality of 9-to-5 life. It had been almost two years since my divorce, and during that time, I had barely worked and paid the bills, coping with life after a failed marriage. So Steve said, “Hey, why don’t you go to the Super Bowl with me. It’ll be a blast. I don’t have a date, I need to meet and take care of some high-profile clients. Some business, but it’ll be a blast. I think you’ll have a Have a blast!”
That sounded like a great idea. I loved football, and even though my team, the Jets, wasn’t playing, participating in any Super Bowl was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. The celebration around the game alone was legendary. I thought we’d party, have a ball, but all we’ve done so far is go to stuff dinner parties night after night, like Steve was doing government contracts, like he was doing now. I was stuck alone in rooms full of such people. People I don’t know. People, frankly, I didn’t want to know. They all looked great in their tuxedos and tails and great dresses. To be honest, I looked amazing in my evening gown, but what a waste. All these people were concerned about and talked about was money and power and attending more dinners like this. I was struck by married men, the only person I knew in this crowded castle was busy chatting with other people. I wanted him to give me a few minutes of his time, so that I could chat with him. I wanted to give him a piece of my heart.
The week was almost wasted and I was bored. I just took my time enjoying the morning by the pool at the hotel. I sighed and stared at the pink fish as a well-dressed servant placed a dish down in front of me. I couldn’t even try to eat it.
“I find salmon boring too.” The man next to me said leaning towards me under his breath. He was very handsome. He had curly black hair and demonic eyes. “It’s almost boring to constantly talk about the underfunding of state congressional budgets and the problems of Democrats in state government.”
“Amen.” I said. I took a sip of wine, stared at the small, exquisite piece of fish, and set my fork down. I always wonder why rich people pay so much for food and then eat servings that don’t fill a Happy Meal carton. “I don’t think I can eat this.” I said.
“Me either.” He nodded, took the napkin from his lap and placed it on his plate. “I think it’s the company and the atmosphere as much as the food.” He continued. “These guys are already dead and don’t know it, they’re just scrambling for funds so they can buy themselves a nice coffin, while Tampa Bay lives on, ready to see Big Ben and Kurt the Magician. Big game tomorrow. Care to get out of here and eat for real? Enjoy the city and the night? Escape from this tomb?”
I looked at him and he smiled, a smile that told me he was looking for some trouble. The thing was, trouble and fun were what I was looking for.
“I know this place with great burgers and chicken wings, big screen TVs, and the frostiest 16 ounce mug you can find in the state of Florida!” he added. did it
“Sure.” I replied and stood up. He joined me. An ever present servant ran towards us.
“Is everything alright ma’am?” he asked politely.
“Okay.” I said “We remember we wanted to do something exciting.”
With that, we exited the large double oak doors at the end of the chamber as the two gatekeepers opened them for us, ready to find the excitement I’d been given when I agreed to come to Florida, if only I could find it. With a new friend instead of an old one.
