Hawaii Vacation-Part 3-Big Island

The third in our four-part series on Hawaii vacations covers the “Big Island,” as the island of Hawaii is often referred to.

As natives (and longtime residents) like to say, there are only two seasons on Hawaii’s Big Island: “summer,” between May and October, and “winter,” from October to April. The climate varies dramatically, however, – in terms of rainfall – from west to east. Hilo, east, or

The “wet” side of the Big Island is the wettest city in the United States.

The “Kona” coast of Big Island Hawaii, (the dry west side), is the most popular destination. It offers accommodation and activities for the pure pursuit of FUN! Snorkeling, diving, kayaking and deep sea fishing are the most popular.

The island is also famous for its volcanoes. Kilauea is the most active volcano in the world. At times you can see lava flowing through the landscape in Volcanoes National Park. On days when the volcano is not erupting, you can explore its unique “lavascape” through its steaming vents, its giant pits and lava craters. Standing at just over 5,000 feet, Kilauea isn’t huge

The island’s tallest volcano, but certainly the most active.

For aerial views of the Big Island, be sure to check out Blue Hawaiian or Tropical Helicopters in Hilo. Dedicated pilots will whisk you away and provide plenty of information during the flight, including a virtually “over-the-top” view of Kilauea Volcano!

And, for those who want to experience the water, trek the Kona Buoy Kayaks across the 113 mile marker on Highway 11 and experience the thrill of Big Island Hawaii–in a big way! There you can rent a kayak or go on a guided tour. Paddle above the waves, skirt stunning cliffs and waterfalls, or snorkel and swim in calm, sheltered bays – your choice. You might even spot some spinner dolphins while paddling past the Captain Cook Monument.

Speaking of dolphins, the Hilton Waikoloa Village on the Big Island has an event called Dolphin Quest. There, in the lagoon, children and teenagers and some adults can have the opportunity to swim with several Atlantic bottle-nosed dolphins. This event is almost always full.

Reservations should be made at least 60 days in advance.

You can go even further by exploring the creatures of the underwater world and their habitats with a visit to the Atlantis Submarine in Kona. And the Kona coast also has world-class fishing.

This area is known as the marlin capital of the world. Big game fish, including giant blue marlin and other Pacific billfish, tuna, and swordfish, abound in the nearshore waters. Hundreds of charter fishing boats operate out of the Kailua-Kona area where you can rent a boat with friends or join daily shared charters.

Mauna Kea is the highest point on the island at 13,796 feet above sea level. Neighboring Maunu Loa and Maui Kea and has some of the cleanest air in the world. As a result, there are more than two dozen of the best telescopes in the world. Tours of the University of Hawaii Telescope are available every weekend.

There are many beaches on the Big Island. Pauoa Beach at the Fairmont Orchid Hotel at Mauna Lani Resort is filled with natural freshwater springs that circulate beneath the ocean’s surface. It is located on Hawaii’s Kohala Coast, on the northwest side of the island.

One of Hawaii’s best beaches, Hapuna Beach, is a landscaped 62-acre beach park. Swimming and other water sports are best enjoyed in the calm sea during summer. Winter surf can be rough. The beach is located on the north-west coast of Kohala. The Hapuna Golf Course, part of the Hapuna Beach Prince Hotel, stretches 700 feet above sea level.

Both a challenge and a beauty.

Honaunau Beach, part of the historic Pu’uhonua o Honaunao National Park, offers a full range of family activities. The name Abhayaranya means “shelter”.

A snorkeler’s delight, Kahaluu Beach Park is located on the west coast of the Big Island. Tourists can discover a colorful variety of marine life, including over 100 species of tropical fish and sea turtles. A large coral reef protects the lake and is home to these animals. A freshwater spring feeds the lake 10 million gallons per day.

Kaunaoa Beach, also known as Mauna Kea, is surrounded by coconut groves and protected by two black-lava points. This beach sits directly in front of the Mauna Kea Hotel. Rough surf makes Kanao’a a delight for bodysurfers and boogie boarders.

Nearby, the Mauna Kea Golf Course is carved out of volcanic black lava and is considered one of the top courses in the United States. Dramatic views of the Pacific Ocean and its coastal cliffs add to the challenge of the course.

South Point on the Big Island is believed to be where the first Polynesians arrived from the Marquesas Islands or Tahiti around 500 AD, and the island they discovered has been attracting visitors for centuries. Will you be one of them?
