Asian Handicaps Explained

The most common way to bet on football in the UK is 3 way betting (sometimes called 1X2). There are three options, home win, draw and away win. Finding out if you won a bet is straight forward. If you bet on a home win and the home side wins, you win, otherwise you lose. The same goes for draws and away wins.

The objective of Asian Handicap betting is to reduce the outcome of the bet from 3 outcomes to 2. This is achieved by starting from one side. The numbers may seem a little difficult at first but once you understand some common handicaps, the rest is easy.

The easiest handicap to draw is the +0.5 handicap. This is given when one team is the clear favorite. So if a home win is expected, the away side can be given a half-goal start. If you bet on the away side, the result of your bet will be as follows:

House win – lose bet

Draw – win bet

Away win – winning the bet

Another easy handicap is the +0 handicap. This is where neither side is favored so neither side is given a round head start. If you bet on the away side, the betting results will be as follows:

House win – lose bet

Draw – draw bet*

Away win – winning the bet

* A draw bet is where your stakes are returned.

The final straight handicap is +1 handicap. This is where one team is a very strong favourite. A half round handicap is not sufficient so a full round head start is given to the weaker side. If an away side is given a +1 handicap and you bet on the away team, the results are as follows:

Home to Win by 2 or More Goals – Lose Bets

Home win by one goal – place a bet.

Draw – win bet

Away win – winning the bet

If you bet on the home team (which has a -1 handicap) the result will be as follows:

Home win by 2 or more goals – win bet

Home win by one goal – place a bet.

Remove – lose the bet

Away win – lose bet

These disabilities may combine to form other disabilities. So if a banker type is favourite, the handicap can be +1.5. Here the favorite has to win by 2 clear goals or the team loses the handicap bet.

Do not confuse this with 1X2 (or European) handicaps. A -1 handicap 1X2 is equivalent to an Asian handicap of -1.5. A +1 1X2 handicap is equivalent to a +0.5 Asian handicap.

The handicaps that people struggle with the most are the 0.25 and 0.75 handicaps. How does a quarter ball handicap differ from a half round handicap? If you bet on a team with a plus quarter ball handicap and the match is a draw, you must win your bet as if it were a half ball handicap. It is not far from what actually happens.

When you quarter these handicaps between them, you are actually making 2 separate bets. So a quarter ball handicap is made up of a 0 handicap bet and a +0.5 handicap bet. Your stake is simply split in half and each bet is placed separately.

So if you bet on a team with more than a quarter handicap and the match ends in a draw, you will win half. If your +0 handicap bet would have been drawn and you get your stake back, your +0.5 bet would have won meaning you win. Overall you win but handicap +0.5 does not win. If you bet on a team with a -0.25 handicap and the match is a draw, you will lose half of your stake.

A 0.75 handicap is simply made up of a +0.5 handicap and a +1 handicap. So if you bet on a team with a -0.75 handicap and they win by exactly one goal, you will only win half. 1.25 handicap is made up of +1 and +1.5 handicap.

Why bother with these Asian handicaps if we already have 3 way betting? The answer lies in the bookie margin. With three results bookies can place a higher margin in the price. Book value is around 106% for a normal matchup even with a near buy for the best 3 ways. The bookie margin is very low with the Asian handicap and two results. It is possible to reduce the bookie margin on most football matches to zero by simply buying around them.

Recommended bookies for Asian handicaps are Bet365, Premierbet, Sportingbet, Ladbrokes, Gamebookers and Victor Chandler. Betfair do Asian Handicaps but after commission the odds are generally worse.
