Warhammer – The Beginners Guide to Rogue Trader and Collecting Warhammer
Rogue Trader Early Years:
A rule book written by Rick Priestley for the Warhammer 40000 game, Rogue Trader was published in 1987, the first issue being largely different from any future issues. It’s mostly a cross between RPG and classic table top games rather than a pure table top battle game. Rogue Trader had a much more in-depth understanding of the 40K universe, its races and their technology, and more background than later versions of the game, for me it is considered a valuable collector’s piece and holds a special place. my collection
This rulebook is considered to be much less rigid in the rules of 40K than later editions, as it used a more extensive set of scenes in the narrative common to future editions and easily promoted mixed faction powers.
Jokero, Slann, Squats, Zoats are examples of races that were not included in the first version of RT.
Rogue Trader had six divisions:
- rules of battle,
- Situation The Crimson Fist Space Marines are fighting Orks on Ryan’s world,
- An equipment section.
- Background Section
- Special rules for advanced gamers,
- Summary with all tables in the book.
Some elements of the setting (bolters, dreadnought armor) can be seen in a set of wargaming rules called Laserburn written by Brian Ansell and produced by Tabletop Games in the 1980s. This influence is also seen in prototypes of Necromunda game mechanics.
My interest in Rogue Trader
It was the Rogue Trader miniatures that caught my attention when I ran into Games Workshop products in the late eighties. Rick Priestley really did a number on my life! When I first started modeling I used to make and paint my own lead models, especially British Red Coats, Prussians and Napoleonic forces etc.
Then one day I bought a pack of Ral Parth fantasy figures and started to fantasize but it wasn’t until 1987 that Rogue Trader arrived that I found something that would cost me a lot of time, effort and of course. Money and that was the good old Imperium of Man – (Rick Priestley wrote Rogue Traders as a freelance explorer hired to explore planets outside the boundaries established by the Imperium) and all the horrible creatures you had to fight. Although there was no sign of Chaos in the beginning, it’s not like it exists today – sure Priestley hinted at warp powers (Chaos) but we didn’t see the full power of Chaos forces until some of the expansions came out. through
The pride of my collection was a complete Imperial Space Marine army, lovingly crafted and painted over the years. Then again I had a fantastic collection of Zoats, Space Slann, Imperial Guard, hey the list really is endless!
After a few years I moved in with my wife and had our first child, gaming suddenly slowed down, working and paying the bills seemed to take up every moment of my life (even when I was going through uni, I managed to balance gaming with real life but Having kids is a whole different ball game 🙂
So over the next decade my beloved collection was lost or broken as we bought our houses and moved for careers and unfortunately I stopped gaming!
Then flash forward to 2001 and a football injury saw me housebound for 6 months and less and lo and behold I started buying 40K models from the local GW shop. In later years I came to really appreciate the craftsmanship of the Rouge Trader models (today’s models are definitely more sculpted/decorated and really nice to the eye) I missed the simplicity of those early models – maybe it was the pink eyes and bags of nostalgia I remembered but suddenly I lost my lost collection. Wanted to get it back!
Boy!!! Easier said than done, since Games Workshop took all the RT stuff out of production and broke most of the mold I was having a hard time finding it but thankfully the web was really starting to take its toll and I was able to find clubs and websites where I could talk to other like minded people. Can and of course EBAY :)) Now I know there are good ones out there and they are few and far between but finding many of my lost minis was number one for me but it was a nightmare shill bidding, sniping, auctions not getting what they wanted, buyers from sales. Falling out, losing figures or breaking in post etc.
Alas now there are many places to find your old miniatures 🙂
