Is Hot Yoga Good For Kids and Teens?

Is heated yoga for kids too cold?

Looks like this hot secret is finally out: hot yoga can benefit kids just as much as adults. And even more.

As a result, many hot yoga studios are seeing an increase in youth presence, especially tween presence.

On a physical level, yoga increases physical flexibility, coordination and strength, all of which make children less likely to get injured on the playground. And children of all ages play many sports in school and after school, including college-level sports.

On an emotional level, children who practice yoga often improve their self-esteem. They are better able to focus and manage stress on tasks including tests, homework, and social life that can become very stressful as they enter year two.

Two of my own sons started yoga with me when they were 14 and 17 (my daughter came to yoga with me when she was 5; but she started practicing on her own at 14). Both are athletes – my daughter Carly plays league softball and soccer and is an avid cross-country biker and hiker. My son Zach is a black belt in karate and recently started capoeira.

My kids credit hot yoga with years of injury-free athletics.

I credit them with keeping my sanity in my teenage years.

What is hot yoga?

Traditional Hot 26 yoga is performed in 105 degrees with 40% humidity, 26 pose sequence for 90 minutes.

The teacher is charged with keeping everyone safe and meeting their maximum challenges, so rest assured: your kids will be well taken care of in the heat.

Benefits for young athletes

Children can play rough.

True hot yoga improves flexibility, coordination and strength, all of which make kids less likely to get injured on the playground. That’s one reason why more and more high school coaches — football, baseball, soccer and hockey — are recommending hot yoga to their young athletes.

In addition, children who practice often have increased self-esteem and are better able to handle stress with tests, homework, and the busy after-school schedule.

And what teenager wouldn’t benefit from a big dose of self-direction?

Yoga-kids also manage emotional challenges better with patience, tolerance, and let’s say the L word: love.

At what age can children do hot yoga?

In my opinion as a yoga teacher, age 10 is the earliest a young student can fully manage the stamina and balance, as well as the heat adaptation needed to fully enjoy a 90 minute hot class.

Make sure they drink plenty of water – half their body weight in ounces – so they go to class already well hydrated.

Should parents bring their kids to yoga? Strong discussion…

I love seeing parents and their kids doing hot yoga together and bonding in a sweaty class.

Even if tweens or teenagers have little in common with their parents, they can still enjoy this challenge together. Being warriors together in a yoga class can be a relief from fighting each other.

A word of caution for parents: Stop parenting when you’re in the classroom with your kids! Don’t correct them, don’t scold them, don’t even put your mat where you can see them – otherwise the temptation to parent them will be too great.

Let the yoga teacher handle everything in the class; Enjoy your practice and let your child enjoy hers.

Yoga teaches balance, body control, even focus and concentration. These yoga-inspired traits are ones that every young person can carry well into adulthood and turn into lifelong habits for happiness and success.

And a time to remind yourself of the value of patience, self-love, and the fact that your body is so resilient is great for the child in all of us adults, too.
