Find a Job in the National Football League – 7 Skills That Are Needed to Work in Sports

For many people, both children and adults, sports are an important part of their lives. Sports are a part of their lives by watching sports on television or in person, playing sports recreationally, or playing sports as a school in high school or college. An employment industry that is steadily growing is the sports industry. Unemployment was 7.6% as of January 2009, courtesy of the United States Department of Labor. With people now looking for jobs and possible career changes, the sports industry is turning into a desired field.

The National Football League (NFL) is the most popular professional sport in the United States. Since the NFL is so popular, a job in the league is very attractive. Seven skills are essential to working in the NFL and the sports industry.

1. Get a bachelor’s degree. The first task is to obtain a college degree with a degree in a subject. Now there are some degrees that will help you more than others for a job in sports such as sport management and sport administration, but a degree in economics and finance will definitely help too.

2. Have a background in Microsoft Office. The twenty-first century has become computer-driven. Computer skills are very important in today’s day and age. Most NFL franchises are Microsoft-based with their operating systems, and every current employee knows how to work with Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Excel and Outlook.

3. Have good communication skills. Being able to communicate effectively and efficiently is fundamental. Speaking skills and writing skills can give a potential employee a higher profile than someone who is lacking or weak in these areas.

4. Keep a positive attitude. Being positive in entry-level jobs makes employers happy. Working as an intern for a sports franchise requires a different kind of work than other jobs and can be quite tedious. Some examples of working for an NFL franchise include:

o Making copies of practice schedules for each coach.

o Attend fan interaction days to build interest in the team.

o Bringing the players to the airport.

o Filing, filing and more filing.

o Attend practice, and travel with the team and participate in training camps.

5. Have excellent time management and organizational skills. An employee needs these two attributes for any job. They are just as important in the NFL. Being able to manage your time properly allows you to get the job done on time as an employee and without worrying about deadlines or delays. Being organized is also important. Being able to know where something is without getting confused or losing things will help set you apart when a higher-level executive asks for your input.

6. Strong work ethic. The NFL is all about hard work. Players have to work hard every day to be the best and win. Coaches have to work hard to create a game plan that gives their team a chance to win each week. Whether you play, coach, sell or market, you have to be prepared to work hard. Demonstrating a strong work ethic will keep you in the job and give your boss the impression that you will always be remembered.

7. Be a leader. It doesn’t matter whether you are entry level or upper management. Demonstrating leadership skills and qualities shows that as a worker and as a person you are not willing to let someone else do the work for you. Being a leader is not being arrogant. Leading by example and having good character are leadership qualities that people and co-workers will respect and keep you in mind when the time comes for you to be hired or promoted.

If you follow these seven skills and have a passion for working in football and the National Football League; You have a chance. The sports industry is becoming highly competitive and the National Football League is no exception. It’s not an easy task to endure but those who show a strong work ethic and are willing to put in the extra time will survive in the National Football League.
