Bouncing Back From Your Setbacks

While preparing this article I started thinking about failures and obstacles. I have discovered that we all experience failures and setbacks at one time or another. In any field or industry, the difference between a champion and everyone else is how they respond to setbacks. Saw the movie ‘Ajinkya’ the other day. The film’s title character dreams of playing in the NFL for his hometown Philadelphia Eagles. It was a long shot and he knew it. He did not play college football and was not drafted into the NFL. Before going to practice every morning, he used to look at the note in the locker. This note inspired him to perform at a higher level. He did it every morning without fail. As I was talking on the TV screen, I was asking, what is in that note? The note was a letter from his ex-wife informing him that she was leaving him and that he would never achieve anything in life. He finally fulfilled his dream of playing for the Philadelphia Eagles and proved that you can bounce back from your setbacks. My goal in this article is to show you three things you need to do to bounce back from your shock. You too can bounce back from your setbacks and all you need are the following three things.

The first thing you need to recover from your setback is the right goal. When I refer to Aim, I mean a vision. Vision helps put your obstacles in perspective. Renowned author and speaker Dr. Gene Mims said it best when he said “When you have a vision, situations arise, but when you don’t have a vision, your situations rule.” It is not enough to have a vision, the vision must be in writing. Did you know that 97% of the population does not have a written vision or goal? Having a written approach will put you in the top 3% of the population.

Another thing you need to recover from your shock is proper focus. By focus, I mean that your focus should be on the process of practice and preparation. An Olympic gold medalist does not win a medal at the Games. He actually won the medal while he was practicing in isolation. If he suffers a concussion in games, he can improve his practice and preparation process and overcome the concussion next time. We can do the same. If we get hit, we can take a step back and improve our preparation and practice process and bounce back.

The third and last thing you need is the right attitude. Winston Churchill said it best when he defined success as the ability to go from failure to failure without losing your enthusiasm. If you have the right goal and the right focus, you recognize that each push is bringing you closer to your goal. I would like to introduce you to someone you may already know. His struggles will help you clarify what it takes to bounce back from your setback. He was born into poverty and received no formal education. He joined the militia and attained the rank of captain. His leadership skills were so questionable that he was demoted to the rank of private. He met a nice young lady and got married. She died of a sudden illness. This incident led to his nervous breakdown. He recovered and decided to start his own business. The business failed. After that he decided to pursue a career in politics. He ran for his state assembly seat and lost. He ran for a seat in the US Congress and lost. He ran for a seat in the US Senate and lost. The person I am introducing you to is Abraham Lincoln, the 16th President of the United States. Besides having the right aim and focus, he had to have the right attitude to overcome all those obstacles.

If you have the right goal, the right focus and the right attitude, you too can bounce back from your setbacks.
