Creativity Leads to Family Enrichment
Creative enrichment for families
Reading stories to my daughter every night until she was twelve gave me great enrichment. To this day we share that rich experience. Many years ago we sat on the couch and I drew for my daughter. She told me how she wanted the figure to look and I drew it as best I could. It was just a fun game at the time, but it was the kind of creative game that honed my daughter’s creative talents in the future and brought us closer as two creatively engaged people. But what I’ve learned is that giving your kids personal time is better than prioritizing whatever video game they might be playing, better than hammering you for any late report, better than clustering around the TV, better than anything. And here’s why…
When you interact with your children through reading, writing, painting, drawing, etc., you bond with them. Personal, everyday parent/child interactions: “…he took my ball, she called me a mouse, do your homework, don’t mess up the kitchen, don’t feed the dog, wipe your feet”… ..this is just interactive creative communication. no part Parent and child are on the same level. You’re all sharing creative time–your kids are enjoying listening to you read, you’re enjoying drawing and telling stories about the pictures with them, you’re all having fun writing about the day you got your cute little kitten. ha has now become a huge and rather majestic family cat.
Forget the parent/child interaction
You are removed from the petty chaos of parents scolding children and children reacting negatively. Combining reading, writing, and art projects puts everyone on the same plane. If you keep the playing level equal with all participants and forget about the parent/child roles you usually play, you’ll have a ball!
OK, but there’s still soccer, football, ballet, and when in the world do you have time for creative play? Make time for creative communication. Yes, it is important that your son’s team wins the next game, and you should be there to cheer him on. But taking even twenty minutes to read, write, draw together, will help you win him over as a reliable and loving parent who is willing to meet him on his level and share the creative process with him.
The message is a mental massage
Life is running fast, the child grows up fast. Just twenty minutes once or twice a week will change the texture of your life. Yes, it will be hard to take them away from their video games and text message friends. But, soon your message will be clear – “I want to spend some time with you.” No lectures, no preaching, no talking – time spent together on a small project to find out what the two of you are made of without playing parent/child roles. One night, just try this. Turn off the TV. Turn off video games. Sit down with the children and invent a story. A short, simple story. And then everyone draws it. Pass the drawings around and talk about the drawing–no criticism, no put-downs, just talk.
Okay, everyone’s yawning–I know. But if you repeat it next week and the week after, it will go away. Your good time is about to begin. It can be a little scary at first. It’s not a video game or TV. It’s just you and the kids. don’t worry Soon, you’ll discover things about yourself–family things that don’t come with soccer and ballet. Like who you are as interconnected human beings, what you think of each other, and how, without competition and bad mouthing from anyone, you can look at each other and appreciate yourselves for who you are.
That nice creative feeling
Remember how you wanted to paint an oil painting? Remember that drawing class you took at community college and loved it? Remember the creative things you did, like finding the perfect knobs for your kitchen cabinets, installing low voltage lighting around your driveway to dramatically illuminate trees and shrubs, or making that silly birthday card for your kid, because you just couldn’t find the right one? You got a warm glow from those projects, didn’t you? good
Creative time for yourself
Take some creative time for yourself. Well, right now your private time is between 10:30 and 11:00 p.m., when you can read a few pages of that novel you renewed three times from the local library and then crash. Twenty minutes once or twice a week perfect for your own creativity. Decide what you will do for those twenty minutes. Draw, paint, write? Engage your creative mind–not for the boss, but for yourself. Recall favorite childhood places and images. Write or draw about them. Enhance your life with color through pastel or acrylic or oil paints. Discover the magic of art mediums and skills. Sit down with a sketch pad and draw your houseplants. Make pastels from your neighbor’s photo at your last New Year’s party (it was fun, yeah?)
It will take a month. After this creative period, you will feel the ripple effect. It’s a great feeling as it prompts your conscious and subconscious mind to get creative and explore the parts of your brain that give you a sense of being healthy, balanced (even wise!) Then, increase those minutes. Try twenty to thirty minutes a day. The ripple effect will be like a positive wave of good feeling, harnessing the powers of your mind that have been dormant for a long time.
Self improvement, creativity, family prosperity
