While I was home over Christmas break, many things changed and I learned a few new things. Once you figure out a system, it’s pretty easy. I see more young competitors becoming more successful in rodeo in the future as fitness, flexibility and eating well become more important. What I’ve seen in a few different rough stock competitors that I’m friends with is when they stop being part of organized sports. I know when I won the most money in bull riding after just one month on the ice, playing hockey three times a day and taking days off at the gym. It was easy to do at the time. I remember being able to do 15 chin-ups and over 30 single leg squats, because it was no big deal. The other day I tried, and I could only do six chin ups, and my knee hurt doing regular squats.

A big difference between being physically fit is flexibility and just being able to be more flexible.

Guess when I started getting injured? I haven’t played hockey in a few days. An outsider will be aware of this. I broke my collar bone and dislocated my shoulder a couple of times to see it for myself. For some it may just be motivation. They think they can get by by not going to the gym and just being a cowboy or being tough about it. Even if you are in great shape and in top physical condition, you can still get injured. As cowboys we are our own masters. Unlike other professional athletes, we don’t have an athletic trainer at every moment of every day to address every complaint and pain. We can suffer from some things and we don’t do anything about it because we don’t have time or we don’t really take the time to take care of it. Some people think that cowboys go up and deal with the pain. I like to be a cowboy and a bull rider and would say I am both. I would also say that I am an athlete. However, since we don’t have coaches like other professional players in sports like hockey or football, we need to take matters into our own hands.

There are rodeo cowboys who take care of themselves and then there are those who don’t. We get to make our own choices in rodeo. We don’t have coaches or bosses to tell us what we should and shouldn’t do, what we should drink or not eat, and whether to go to the doctor when something is wrong.

Those who take care of themselves often advance in the game. I’ve seen quite a few different people quit their jobs in my short career because they didn’t take care of themselves when they were my age or younger. You are the controller of your own destiny as the choices you make ultimately help steer the course of your life. You can live as you want.
