Speed Development in Youth Football – A Few Qucik Tips For Developing Speed

speed development

For the second year in a row my youth football program is doing a brief “football speed” development program in the spring. This program is designed to increase the excitement of playing in our program while working on form and “football speed” development.

The program is called FASTT for fun, agility, speed and technique training. The program is divided into three sections, the first section is the “football speed” development part, here we work on form, speed and quickness development using modern plyometric movements integrated into football movements. We use a combination of body weight, ladders, cones, medicine balls, box jumps and harness work in this part of the program.

Basic skill development

The second section focuses on basic fundamental football technique development. We don’t use pads for this. We focus on breaking down each fundamental football movement into teachable steps and then executing those steps. We don’t work on our schemes or football plays, it’s all basic skill development and the drills and skills change every day.

Game time

The ultimate division is pure fun team competitive games. Most of these team building games have nothing to do with football. What they do for kids helps them bond with each other and helps them develop a strong sense of competition, all while having fun.

It’s not conditioning, it’s a process that helps build momentum and excitement in our youth football program. It also shows players and parents how we work with children and that children understand our expectations and communication methods. It definitely helps us in August when many teams are struggling through their first few practices, we are able to move quickly in evaluations, teaching fundamentals and planning.

next season team

As I mentioned earlier, we are expanding our program to 4 teams, one age

6-7 flag team, age 7-9 tackle team, age 10-11 tackle and age 12-13 tackle. After head coaching 2 teams last year I will head coach all 3 tackle teams next season. The reason I have all 3 teams is because the parents want them and I’m building 3 head coaches that I want to work with me for a season before I turn a team over to them. While many of these future head coaches have excellent credentials, youth football is much more X’s and O’s. in

Omaha When I expanded from 1 team to 16 teams in 5 years, we didn’t skimp on the coaching program and we expanded our infrastructure, now we have a head coach development program that caters to everyone. Become an effective youth football coach.

Faster in summer

The FASST program runs for 7 weeks and started on April 1st, we meet once a week for just 90 minutes. We want to get very hungry kids to contact us, and many are even playing baseball. We leave a written summer development program with each player that they can use if they choose. We show parents what we’re looking for on movement in a group presentation in May and leave them with a written workout plan. I let the parents know that I don’t care if Junior does anything during the summer, but let the kids be young and make sure they are spending plenty of time in the sun. On the other hand, we have some kids who are really tough and if they want to do something on their own over the summer, we give them the tools to do it.

Doing activities like “Speed Camp” or FASST has helped set us apart from other youth football programs in the area and given us a great path into the fall. Make sure our league rules do not prohibit this type of activity in any way and check your league rules before starting.
