#22 Nebraska Cornhuskers Preview

Spring practices are in the books and camps will be here before you know it, meaning an early jump into the 2006 NCAA football season. Knowing the teams now will save you time in August, and Matt Fargo is here to help you understand what to expect this upcoming year. We go from worst to first in this 2006 college football preview.

#22 – Nebraska Cornhuskers 8-4 SU; 6-5 ATS

This will be the third year of Fargo’s Tech Bill Callahan West Coast crime experiment, and it’s going to be an important one. The Huskers finished a disappointing 96th in total offense last year and were 69th the year before. Offenses will get better and not regress in the second year of the new system so a big improvement is needed or Callahan could be out sooner than expected. It is said that it takes three years for the West Coast offense to click so there is time. Nebraska has been to a bowl in two of the last three years and both of those were the Alamo Bowl so it will be up to Callahan to get the Huskers back to the big time bowl game. He’ll have a solid defense to work with, and if the offense improves like that, Nebraska could be on its way to glory days again. Playing in the Big XII Championship is a goal that cannot be discounted.

Returning starters on offense – 7 Quarterback Zach Taylor held his own last season by passing for a school-record 2,653 yards while tossing 19 touchdowns. The offense obviously depends on him and he will have no problem running it. The problem is up front because Nebraska has only one starter returning on an offensive line that allowed 38 sacks last season. Possibly even worse, the running game lacks running back experience to replace Corey Ross. The Huskers rank 107th in the nation in rushing offense, and in order for the West Coast offense to thrive, the running game needs to be established. Sophomores Marlon Luckey and Cody Glenn should step up immediately. Taylor has five of the top six pass catchers but getting them the ball all starts up front.

Returning starters on defense – 7 The Blackshirts went from 56th in total defense in 2004 to 26th last season, and that ranking could get even better. The defense is third-best in the Big XII behind Texas and Oklahoma and arguably the best seven in the conference. The linebackers are the best unit in the conference with Corey McKean leading the way. Bo Rude, Steve Octavian and Stewart Bradley are all back from injury, and this unit is rivaling Penn St. as one of the nation’s best. The defensive line is led by Adam Carriker and Jay Moore and has a total of six players named to the All-Conference Watch List, which is pretty impressive considering some aren’t even starters. The secondary, i.e. safety, is the biggest question as both starters need to be replaced. The Blackshirts are back.

Schedule Nebraska is fortunate to play in the Big XII North, weak in two divisions. Therefore, the Huskers only face three teams from the South, and this season, two of the three on the list are Oklahoma and Texas Tech. Those two lost two of four to Nebraska last year. Another bonus is that Texas gets to come to Memorial Stadium. Four of the first five games are at home this season but that one road game is the Bears at USC. Nebraska should be 6-1 heading into that game against the Longhorns, and the game at Iowa St. is the only other hurdle. After Texas, it has won three of its last four games, including the game at Texas A&M. Nebraska does not have a bye week until its season finale against Colorado.

You can bet on … the Huskers’ success and offense if they can surpass their eight-win streak from a season ago. The offensive line is a huge question mark but at least the early part of the schedule is easy, without USC, which could give the unit time to come together. The defense will wear down the Huskers early. Nebraska is just 3-6 ATS as a road underdog since 2002 and will certainly get points in Pasadena. Making matters worse, they are coming off a win against Troy and have won just 10 of their last 26 games following a straight-up win. Beating USC isn’t as impossible as it once was, but it will take a valiant effort to beat the Trojans, who have won 27 straight at home.
