The Short and Sweet Life of Cory Monteith

Cory Allen Michael Monteith was born on May 11, 1982 in Calgary, Alberta. His father was a military man and his mother worked as an interior designer. Monteith was the younger of two siblings and his parents divorced when he was just seven years old. After they separated, Monteith and his older brother Sean moved with their mother to Victoria, British Columbia. He could not see his father regularly due to military commitments. Monteith struggled in school life as he attended sixteen different schools—and faced social and learning difficulties.

By the age of thirteen, Monteith was a regular user of alcohol and marijuana, and played trinkets on an increasing basis. While attending school, Monteith participated in several programs dedicated to helping troubled teenagers. However, he left school at the age of sixteen, hoping for a better future. By that point, Monteith’s addiction to drugs and alcohol had escalated to the point where he began stealing from those close to him to pay for his habits.

In his later teenage years, Monteith worked as a taxi driver, school bus driver, and Walmart greeter. His personal life continued to decline until the age of nineteen, when his mother and a group of friends intervened. After some time, Monteith began attending a rehab program and slowly began to get his life back on track.

With problems with alcohol and drug addiction, Monteith pursued an acting career in Vancouver, British Columbia. He started out with several bit roles in shows like “Stargate Atlantis,” “Supernatural,” and “Smallville.” Over the next few years, he played several more small roles on television and the big screen, but it took until 2009 for Monteith to make a name for himself as an actor. Fox was in the process of casting for the new television series “Glee.” Elena Kirshner, Monteith’s agent, submitted a video to producers of Monteith drumming with some pencils on a Tupperware container. Ryan Murphy, the show’s producer, was impressed by what he saw, but pointed out to Kirshner that Monteith needed to sing really well to secure the lead role of Finn Hudson. Shortly thereafter, Monteith released another tape in which he belted out the 1980s classic.

Mass auditions for “Glee” hopefuls were held in Los Angeles. After his audition, casting directors commented that Monteith’s singing skills were weak, but they were captivated by his sweet charm. Monteith landed the lead role of Finn Hudson and would play the actor for four seasons. In the show, Monteith’s character is the quarterback of his high school’s football team, but he makes the surprising decision to join the glee club. The popularity of “Glee” grew over the years and the show became popular among teenagers and young adults. In the show, Monteith’s character had a love interest, Rachel Berry, played by Lea Michele. In early 2012, it was announced that the pair had begun a real-life relationship.

Monteith won several television awards for his portrayal of Finn Hudson, most notably the Male Future Style Icon Award at the 2010 Hollywood Style Awards. In 2012, Monteith took home the TV Star: Male award at the Do Something Awards. That same year, Monteith teamed up with Straight But Not Narrow, an online organization that seeks to improve young people’s perceptions of the LGBT community. Later that year, Monteith hosted the 23rd GLAAD (Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation) Media Awards with his “Glee” costar Naya Rivera.

In March of 2013, Monteith checked himself into a treatment facility for drug addiction. “Glee” cast members encouraged Monteith to take the action after seeing his behavior on set. Four weeks after he began attending the clinic, Monteith’s publicist announced that he had completed his treatment and would be leaving the facility.

On July 13, 2013, Monteith’s body was found in a hotel room in Vancouver. Monteith was supposed to check out that day, but when he didn’t show up, hotel staff opened the door and found him dead. Shortly after, “Glee” creator Ryan Murphy announced that production would be pushed back a few weeks and the premiere of the series’ fifth season would be delayed. It was also announced that the third episode of the upcoming season will be devoted solely to the life of Cory Monteith. Although his life ended prematurely, Monteith will be remembered as someone who poured his whole soul into his acting career and faced his share of hardships like no other.
