John Lennon – The Misunderstood Beatle

While watching Monday Night Football, on an unremarkable evening on December 8, 1980, I was hungover when I heard Howard Cosell interrupt the game with a news flash. Was John Lennon shot in New York City? Could it be true? It was true. He was later declared dead. I was shocked. Then my brother Mark called me with the news. We were both John Lennon fans.

The Beatles, the Fab Four of the 60s, were each given character descriptions or nicknames by their fans. John was smart, Paul was cute, George was mysterious and Ringo was funny.

I’ve always thought that John Lennon’s character description or nickname should be dubbed, “The Misguided Beatle” because he always seemed to stir up controversy about his beliefs. He couldn’t fully explain his comments and the media didn’t help.

Take, for example, a comment he made on March 4, 1966, when he said, “The Beatles are more popular than Jesus.” It meant that more people would watch the Beatles than go to church on Sunday. Which would be true. He made a slight generalization by blaming America, when he meant England.

Lennon was interviewed for the London Evening Standard by Maureen Cleve, a friend, and made off-the-cuff comments about religion. Lennon said, “Christianity will go. It will disappear and shrink. We’re more popular now than Jesus; I don’t know which will go first–rock and roll or Christianity. Jesus was all right but his disciples were fat. And normal.” . . it’s the twists and turns that spoil it for me.”

On August 11, 1966, the Beatles held a press conference in Chicago, which was met with growing outrage.

Lennon: I think if I had said that television was more popular than Jesus I would have left it, but I was just talking to a journalist friend (Maureen Cleve) and I used the word “Beatles” as a remote thing. , not the way I think–like the Beatles, like other Beatles, like other people see us. I just said that they have more influence on children and things than anything else, including Jesus. But I said it that way, which is the wrong way.”

Reporter: Some teenagers have repeated your statements–“I like the Beatles more than Jesus Christ.” What do you think about that?

Lennon: Well, originally I made this fact in the context of England. We meant more to children than Jesus or religion at that time. I wasn’t knocking it down or putting it down. I was just stating it as a fact, and it is more true for England than it is here. I am not saying that we are better or greater, or compared to Jesus Christ as a person or as God, or whatever. I said what I said and it was wrong. Or it was taken wrong. And now this is all.

Reporter: But are you ready to apologize?

Lennon: I was not saying what they are saying. I’m sorry I really spoke. I never meant it to be anti-religious. I apologize if that made you happy. I still don’t know what I’ve done. I tried to tell you what I did, but if you want me to apologize, if it makes you happy, then fine, I’m sorry.

John Lennon returned to the subject later that year, when he told Look magazine, “I believe Jesus was right, Buddha was right, and all those people are right. They’re all talking the same thing–and I believe it. Jesus What I believe is what He said–the basic things He said about love and goodness–and not what people say. If Jesus being more popular means more control, I don’t want it. Even if it’s just dancing and singing all my life, that’s all too soon. will follow us. If they take more interest in what Jesus–or any of them–says, if they do, we’ll all be there with them.

Although there was little reaction to his statement in England, Christians elsewhere began a massive campaign to destroy Beatle albums and other material. The Archbishop of Boston admitted that he was probably right, but many still refused to forgive him.

I relate to his controversial statement, because I’ve made similar statements, like, when I drive by a gambling casino on Sunday, I’ll say–“Look at all those cars–try to build a parking lot in that church.” Of course, I meant that gambling is more popular than Jesus. I hope that’s not true — here in America. Am I in trouble for saying that?

All this did not bother Lennon, who continued to use religious criticism in his songs, was one godReleased in 1971. The lyrics are as follows:

god (Words and Music by John Lennon)

God is a concept

by which we measure

Our pain

I’ll say it again

God is a concept

by which we measure

our pain

I don’t believe in magic

I don’t believe in the I-Ching

I don’t believe in the Bible

I don’t believe in tarot

I don’t believe in Hitler

I don’t believe in Jesus

I don’t trust the Kennedys

I don’t believe in Buddha

I don’t believe in mantra

I don’t believe in lyrics

I don’t believe in yoga

I don’t believe in kings

I don’t believe in Elvis

I don’t trust Zimmerman

I don’t believe in the Beatles

I only believe in myself

Yoko and me

And that is reality

The dream is over

what can i say

The dream is over

yesterday

I was a dream weaver

But now I am reborn

I was a walrus

But now I’m John

And dear friends

You just have to keep going

The dream is over

the end

Once again, Lennon was misunderstood. He was shunned by many Christians. I always understood Lennon’s style. I felt that he was reaching out to questions that we dare not ask. He was the buffer between reality and belief. Some considered it dangerous. I thought it was harmless. Even though he said, “I don’t believe in Jesus.” And he said, “I don’t believe in the Bible.” He probably should have kept them off the song to at least avoid controversy and save his career.. But, Lennon was Lennon and he didn’t care. He was saying that he is free to sing what he wants to say, or what he wants to sing. I’m sure it hurt his career. Paul McCartney’s career only blossomed. George and Ringo have no intention of leaving. His career remained stable.

I always thought there would be a more fitting song for John Lennon–Don’t get me wrong, written and performed by fellow musician and friend Eric Burden. He also wrote a book under the same title.

In 1973, Lennon wrote and sang the song, imagine, a highly critical– but popular song. It questioned the existence of heaven and hell and no religion. This also angered the Christians. His message was clear to me. He was simply saying, if none of these things were imagined by him, the world would live in peace – as one. What would be the fight there? There will be no wars. Many wars are about religion. Song is imagination. He is not a terrorist who wants to blow up the world. The lyrics are as follows.

imagine

(Words and Music by John Lennon)

Imagine that there is no heaven

It’s easy if you try

There is no hell below us

Only the sky above us

All people imagine

Live for today

Imagine there are no countries

It’s not hard to do

There is nothing to kill or die for

And neither is religion

All people imagine

Living life in peace

You might say I’m a dreamer

But I’m not alone

I hope you will join us one day

And the world will be the same

Imagine having no assets

I wonder if you can do it

No need for greed or hunger

brotherhood of man

All people imagine

All the world is sharing

You might say I’m a dreamer

But I’m not alone

I hope you will join us one day

And the world will live as one

the end

Lennon was always outspoken. Some say he was a hypocrite when he preached about love and peace – not war. In 1969, he demonstrated his faith in a song he wrote, Give peace a chanceIn his solo career, after leaving The Beatles.

He defended many rights and causes. He was an anti-war activist. His beliefs were misinterpreted and often taken as socialist or communist. President Nixon wanted to deport him. Lennon stood up and fought for his right to be where he loved to be– in New York City, USA, where, unfortunately, he was killed by a deranged fan.

During his solo career, Lennon wrote and sang songs of rebellion with his political views. He would associate with anti-war leaders such as Jerry Rubin, Abby Hoffman and others. Lennon and his friends organized a concert in Ann Arbor, Michigan in December of 1971, called the “Free John Sinclair” concert. Sinclair was a local anti-war activist serving ten years in state prison for selling two joints of marijuana to an undercover cop. Lennon appeared on stage with Phil Ochs, Stevie Wonder and other musicians, as well as Black Panthers anti-radicals Jerry Rubin and Bobby Seale. 20,000 attended; Two days after the concert, the state of Michigan released John Sinclair from prison. During this time, a song written and sung by Lennon was released, titled John Sinclair.

In 1972, Lennon released an anti-sex song titled, Woman is the nigger of the world, meaning that just as blacks were discriminated against in some countries, so were women globally. The lyrics are as follows.

Woman is the nigger of the world

(Words and Music by John Lennon)

Woman is the nurse of the world

Yes she is… Think

Woman is the nurse of the world

Think about it…do something

We paint her face and make her dance

If she is not a slave, we say she does not love us

If she is real, we say she is trying to be a man

Putting her down, we pretend she is above us

Woman is the world’s bitch… yes she is

If you don’t believe me, take a look at who you’re with

A woman is a slave of slaves

Oh yeah…it’s better to shout about it

We turn her into a bear and raise our children

And then we leave her flat for being a fat old mother hen

We tell her that her home is the only place

Then we complain that she is too casual to be our friend

Woman is the world’s bitch… yes she is

If you don’t believe me, take a look at who you’re with

A woman is a slave of slaves

Yeah…okay…kill!

We insult her everyday on TV

And wonders why she doesn’t have the guts or confidence

When she is young we kill her to break free

We put her down for being dumb, telling her not to be so smart

Woman is the nurse of the world

Yes she is… if you don’t believe me, look at who you’re with

A woman is a slave of slaves

Yes she is… if you don’t believe me you better scream about it

We paint her face and make her dance

We paint her face and make her dance

We paint her face and make her dance

We paint her face and make her dance

We paint her face and make her dance

We paint her face and make her dance

the end

Interestingly, in 1971, Lennon also wrote and sang this song, titled, Merry Christmas. It became a holiday favorite. Why he left is questionable Christ In Christmas. But “X” is the Greek symbol for Christ.

This year marks the 26th anniversary of John Lennon’s death. His killer is still in jail. This musical genius took the music world by storm. I am sure he misses his works and imagination. If he didn’t have a clear faith, he would still be with us today. That must be why he was killed. But just imagine (I wonder if you can)–it would never have happened John Lennon.
