Roger Staubach and the Dallas Cowboys

Born on February 15, 1945 in Cincinnati, Ohio, Roger Staubach is known as “Roger the Dodger” for his scrambling ability and “Captain Comeback” for his last minute comeback in the fourth quarter. Staubach’s career began when he was named the starting quarterback for the Navy football team in 1962. He then won the Heisman Trophy Award and was elected to the College Hall of Fame in 1981. After completing his tenure with the United States Navy Roger joined the Dallas Cowboys. He was a 10th round draft pick by the Dallas Cowboys in 1964. Staubach began coaching the Dallas Cowboys and led the team to nine of the Cowboys’ record twenty consecutive winning seasons.

Although he started out as the second-string quarterback with the Cowboys, Rogers got his first chance to play when starting quarterback Craig Morton suffered a devastating loss to the New Orleans Saints. He then led the Cowboys to a Superbowl VI victory at starting quarterback and was named Most Valuable Player in 1972. Staubach played with the Cowboys until 1979 under coach Tom Landry. Staubach was a 6-time Pro Bowler and won Super Bowl XII in 1977.

One of Roger’s most memorable moments was when he threw a 50-yard “Hail Mary pass” in 1975 to then-wide receiver Drew Pearson who caught the pass and entered the end zone to seal a 17-14 victory over the Minnesota Vikings, trailing 14-14. 10.

Staubach would retire in 1979. Overall he completed 11 NFL seasons with 22,700 yards, 153 touchdowns, 109 completions and more than 1600. He was inducted into the Football Hall of Fame in 1985.
