Man United, The Birth of a Star

Marcus Rashford: Who is he, where did he come from and what does his presence mean for Manchester United’s future?

Manchester United are still the outside odds to finish in the top three in the 2015/16 Premier League. Who knows, the football club might even collect some silverware this season, with both the FA Cup and the Europa League still up for grabs.

Still, by most metrics, the 2015/16 season hasn’t been a great one for Man United. Despite an early exit from the title race by last season’s champions (Chelsea FC), the Red Devils were unable to return to their former heights of Premier League dominance. Rumors of Louis van Gaal exiting the manager’s job – either through sacking or resignation – have also been common this season. United’s kit manufacturer, Adidas, also admitted how boring the team’s soccer team has looked on the field this season.

The birth of a star?

Regardless of these factors, however, there are still some bright spots in Manchester’s 2015/16 campaign. One of these brilliant performances came in a home match against Denmark’s FC Midtjylland on 25 February. The game, which served as the second leg of the Europa League Round of 32, was a make-or-break moment for the Red Devils. They lost the first leg 1-2 to Midland and needed a clean sweep to progress to the round of 16.

Instead of just skating to a 1-0 win—which would have given United victory in the round of 32 on away goals—the Red Devils completely dominated the Danish football club. After falling behind 0-1 at the 27-minute mark, things looked dire for Manchester for a moment. However, the former English champions had a revival when Midland conceded an own goal after just five minutes and played their best 30 minutes of soccer in the second half they had played all season.

Man United scored four goals in the last half hour of the match to secure a decisive victory and put themselves in the next round of the knockout stages. Even more remarkable, the hero of the match was a complete unknown: 18-year-old forward Marcus Rashford. Rashford scored twice in quick succession to give the Red Devils a 3-1 lead over Midfield. Anders Herrara and Memphis Depay then scored own goals to turn United’s win into a highlight of the season. Talk about a twist.

The story behind Rashford’s big debut

Until that February 25 Europa League match, Rashford had never previously featured in a senior football match. Now, he is one of United’s biggest rising stars. Could United have the best chance to save the soccer season?

To understand what Rashford could mean for the Red Devils going forward – in final action in 2015/16 and in the years to come – we have to look at how the 18-year-old attacker got his big break. first place

For most of the season, Rashford has been playing as part of United’s under-19 squad. He is no newcomer to Old Trafford: the 18-year-old has been part of United’s youth program since 2005. Louis van Gaal even named Rashford as a substitute for two Premier League matches earlier in the season: a pair of November matches against Watford and Leicester City respectively. Rashford ultimately didn’t see any playing time in either of those games, but a closer eye would have seen him as a potential up-and-coming talent from looking at United’s lineups.

Rashford finally entered the pitch in United’s 25 February match against Midland as Louis van Gaal had no other option. Wayne Rooney is out with a knee injury. Anthony Martial was sidelined (at the last minute, no less) with a hamstring injury after suffering an injury in the warm-up. The duo, who have played the center forward role throughout the 2015/16 season, were among around a dozen players forced out of the lineup for both Midtjylland’s Europa League match and the Premier League match next weekend. Arsenal. In other words, the Dutch manager was running out of players to keep on the pitch and turned to United’s youth academy for reinforcements.

This decision could easily have led to a crisis. That can Manchester United’s board have finally been given a reason to sack Louis van Gaal. An early exit from the Europa League or a heavy defeat in that crucial EPL match against Arsenal would have been difficult for the Red Devils (and, their fans) to recover from.

A record breaking performance

Instead, Van Gaal got lucky. Rashford showed every bit of his potential in the Midfield match on 25 February, taking over Rooney’s role as centre-forward and scoring two goals. The first of these two made Rashford the youngest Manchester United player to score in European competition. The second made him one of the most talked about talents in the world of soccer.

This success was no fluke: just three days later, Rashford made his Premier League debut at Old Trafford, taking the centre-forward position against Arsenal. At the 29-minute mark, Rashford broke the ice and scored the first goal of the match (and the first goal of his Premier League career). He is the third youngest United player to score in an EPL game behind Federico Macheda and Danny Welbeck. He scored again three minutes later.

Ironically, Danny Welbeck scored Arsenal’s first goal at the 40 minute mark, but it wasn’t enough. In a competitive game that saw Manchester United trailing in possession and relying on defence, Rashford’s early brace gave the Red Devils the edge they needed to secure victory. He also assisted Herrara to take United’s tally to three in the second half. He was undoubtedly man of the match.

Next chapter

The question now is how Marcus Rashford will fit into Manchester United’s lineup as many of the football club’s injured players begin to return to action. Anthony Martial is expected to make a quick recovery from his relatively minor injury. Rooney’s sideline spell may last a bit longer, but where does that leave Rashford when both return to full health?

With all the praise for Rashford right now – and how the youngster saved Man United from almost certain defeat in a pair of crucial matches – it will be hard to leave him on the bench or send him back to the U’s. -19 Squad. With wins against Arsenal and Manchester City showing some glaring weaknesses in the past few weeks, the Red Devils could have a chance to pull off a podium finish before the end of the season. To get there, he’ll need someone to inject excitement and pace into United’s dry style of play, and Marcus Rashford could be the man for the job.

Then again, Marcus is So young, and as Van Gaal points out, too much praise and pressure can easily go to his head. This is a teenager with only two senior starts under his belt really Ready to take on the role of permanent center? And if he becomes a regular part of the lineup, who will be pushed out of the lineup? Will it be fellow forward Memphis Depay, who has disappointed since arriving at Old Trafford from PSV Eindhoven? Will it be Anthony Martial, who Louis van Gaal paid so handsomely for last summer? Will it be winger and rising star Jesse Lingard?

Only time will tell what decision Louis van Gaal will make going forward, and frankly, it’s nothing to envy. Still, we hope we’ll be seeing a lot more of Marcus Rashford on the pitch in the final months of the 2015/16 season. The 18-year-old newcomer has, quite simply, given Manchester United supporters something to cheer about again.

Do you think Rashford can help turn things around at Manchester United? Can the Red Devils still manage Champions League qualification and some potential silverware in the FA Cup or Europa League?
