Blocking With Your Hands Or Elbows – Coaching Youth Football

I will analyze some common ideas about blocking Pay Wee Football in this post. I will review some unique tips and styles trained by teams in the USA. Many styles are fine while others are useless. This will be a basic post describing how important it is to train proper lane blocking, especially for juniors.

The wise OLS coach said “To be successful in football your block and tackle better than your opponent”. It’s the key to success in football, from the NFL to Pop Warner. It doesn’t matter how sophisticated or slick your offensive system is, if the offensive linemen don’t block well, your team won’t have success. There’s always that one exception, and in Pop Warner football, these teams are God-given greased lightning speeds for their ball carriers.

If you’re coaching young players and you have the fastest players in the league, you don’t need great blocking. Get your ball speed back and watch everyone race to the end zone. Most teams are lucky to see players of this caliber once a decade, so it’s best to build a team as if you don’t have the fastest player in the league. As teams get older and more experienced, you can train game plans to rein in that momentum, but when players are young, it’s nearly impossible to stop.

The age-old blocking argument comes up every year over whether or not kids should be trained to block using their hands, or whether players should use old-school techniques where players put their hands on their own chests and stick their elbows out. I like to show it in both styles and let each kid use the style that works best for him.. If you do your job right and teach the proper three-point stance, the style the players prefer won’t matter. And will be. A matter of personal preference.

Kids really prefer the old school elbow style. I believe this is an improvement as it will prevent our players from catching the opponent and make it difficult for the opponent to move around them. When using the elbow out method I like to show the kids to grab their own jersey.

If players choose to use their hands when blocking, it is important to train them not to take anything. I choose to coach this block as a punch block, making our linemen a fist. Your block instincts take over as soon as you start and you can hold if a defender is running around you. By having your kids make a fist, it will stop the reflex, which is to grab the defender’s jersey.
