NFL – All Time Scoring Record Holder Morten Andersen Retires

Danish kicker and NFL all-time leading scorer Morton Andersen, 48, announced his retirement on December 8, 2008, due to knee problems that have affected him over the years. Anderson, who did not play in the current season, told reporters that he was trying to get another contract with the NFL team, but he realized that it was not and he could not train the way he used to now. Danish announced his retirement from the NFL in his hometown of Copenhagen after a 25-year professional career in American football.

Morton began his football career in 1977 as an exchange student at Ben Davis High School in Indianapolis. In the 1998-99 season with the Falcons, he made a career highlight by kicking a field goal past the Vikings and winning Atlanta’s first and only NFC title, the franchise’s first appearance in the Super Bowl.

Later, Anderson played for one season with the New York Giants in 2001 and moved on to the Kansas City Chiefs for the next two seasons. He then spent one season with the Vikings and became a free agent after the 2004 season; Hence, he did not play in 2005. But for the 2006 season, Morton returned to the NFL to once again play with the Atlanta Falcons. In December 2006, he broke all-time leading scorer Gary Anderson’s record and became the new all-time leading scorer in NFL history as well as the NFL’s career leader in field goals.

Morton re-signed with the Falcons in 2007 and finished the regular season making 25 of 28 field goals, resulting in the most accurate season of his career. During the 2008 season, he did not receive a call-up to play with any team and continued with his knee injuries; Anderson decided it was time to retire.

Morton finished his 25-year career with 2,544 points played in 382 NFL games. He made 565 of 709 field goal attempts. He was also part of NFL teams of the decade in the 1980s and 1990s.
