11 Commandments of a Jedi Master
dream big. All the millionaires I interview have big dreams. They believe that they are worth more than a 9-to-5 job and that there is more to life than working forty (or more) hours a week for forty years only to take a forty percent pay cut once they retire. These big dreamers are also willing to risk money and time (reasonable risk) and just go for it. Many of them have even threatened agriculture at times. Now don’t get me wrong; I’m not asking you to do this and I’m not asking you to put all your eggs in one basket and hope. However, you might want to consider taking some of that hard-earned cash and try something new, perhaps part-time at first. Try building a small business, stock options, or flipping some real estate for cash. You never know, I might be interviewing you next!
Get out of your comfort zone. We all operate in a comfort zone, a certain way of life that we have become accustomed to over time. Unfortunately, these comfort zones often keep us from what we want. For years, I believed I was worth about $50,000 a year, and during this time, $50,000 was paid to me. I didn’t know any better, so I kept working for someone else and earned less than I deserved. Then, I had an epiphany and believed I was worth $250K a year. I quit my job and started my own business. Well, I didn’t hit $250K that first year – but I did make $245K that year! You must attack your comfort zone. We need to get out of this; Pushing yourself to do things you don’t like; Pushing yourself to try new things; Push yourself to break your bad habits and let go of your limiting beliefs. Frighten yourself! All successful people know the unknown planet, the realm of the unknown and unknown. Now, it’s your turn to join the ranks of these successful people.
Work smart, not difficult. Millionaires work smarter, not harder. Don’t get me wrong; They still tend to work 16-hour days, but they use their time more effectively than others. They have a good plan to earn money and a good plan to monetize their labor. And if they are going to work sixteen hours a day, they want to personally reap the fruits of their labor. Their time is too valuable to waste making money for someone else. Here are some smart strategies: Invest in real estate. A small business. Let your money earn. Invest in shares. Manage, but don’t. Be unique in the market. Find successful models and mentors and model your own. Trade money for time, not time for money!
Quick and dead. A key rule for successful people is “Take action!” While you are sitting thinking about them, someone else is taking action. People are starting new businesses, controlling their credit, starting online companies, buying new homes or investing in property, cutting their taxes by 50%. Stop analyzing things to death and make a decision. It is time to act fast.
Take the emotion out of the decision. Face the fear! Our culture teaches us to weigh both sides of a decision. For the most part, it’s good advice. It only becomes a problem when people get stuck on weight. They spend all their time looking for yet another piece of information. They review death – “Shouldn’t we? Shouldn’t we?” By the time they make a decision, the opportunity is gone. For most people, there is only one reason they miss out on opportunities – fear! You may be afraid of loss, fear of failure, or perhaps fear of rejection. This fear holds you back. It costs you financially and emotionally. Contrary to this mindset, millionaires learn to conquer their fears, overcome them, and focus on three simple things: first, investing; second, return; Third, the likelihood of success. If there is a good return on investment, go for it! Even when you’re terrified, you need to take that first step forward.
Total commitment Successful people give everything they have and never utter the words “I tried”. Either they get the results they are looking for or they don’t. They never back down from a project. It keeps them up late and wakes them up early. They work 40 hours a week at their regular job and then spend another 20 hours buying real estate or starting a small business – even when they’re tired. When you’re old and gray, don’t let it be said of you, “You lost your dreams because you were watching TV.” All you have to do is schedule some time for success. It could be as little as eight hours a week to begin with, perhaps, every Saturday morning or Monday-day night (also, maybe Tuesday night during football season). Schedule time and results will follow.
Guide. Guides are worth their weight in gold. Take my word for it; This has been proven time and time again! Mentors will teach you things that you could never learn from a book, self-study manual, video or website. When I first learned golf, I already had experience playing hockey, but I found that swinging the golf club as if it were a hockey stick resulted in a terrible slice to the right. I bought every magazine, book and video on golfing to fix the problem. I was cheap and didn’t want to spend money on lessons. After much wrangling, I decided I wasn’t the problem – it was the club! So, I bought new clubs (fire sticks). Alas, that new club only helped me drive the ball deeper into the trees. Finally, I broke down and bought some lessons and the problem was fixed in the first lesson! Immediate feedback, coaches or mentors can quickly put you on the path to success.
A student of success. Millionaires never stop learning. They constantly study success. They study money, real estate, business and property-building. They have a thirst for new knowledge and are the first to buy tapes, books and manuals or seek further training. Several years ago, I documented over $81,000 in purchases for seminars, training and self-study materials to improve my education. I wouldn’t have gotten to where I am now without it. Continuous learning is the key to my success and countless others. Invest in yourself first!
Bounce back well. Millionaires are by no means immune to failure. They suffer losses, but they maintain a positive outlook. They tell themselves, “I’ll get them next time. I just have to work a little harder or smarter to get a better result.” They know they just need a good plan and they realize that a flat ball doesn’t bounce – so they keep pumping it.
Selective memory. There are no failures, only learning experiences. When successful people swing at a baseball, they don’t remember 66% of the time; They remember 34% of the times they got hit. They keep their successes close and leave their failures behind. The problem with most people is that they refuse to forget the last time they failed. No wonder they stopped swinging the bat. Selective memory is the key to success.
don’t leave. The character of men and women is not measured by the number of their failures, but by the number of times they fail and try again. Ask Sylvester Stallone whose script for Rocky was rejected over 300 times! Just ask Edison who tried to invent over 10,000 (no, that’s not a typo – ten thousand) light bulbs. Ask Lincoln who failed dozens of times as he tried to gain political office. Success is just one decision and one step away! Never give up, and you will be on the road to prosperity.
