What’s a Butkus?

The dive play is the most basic play in the game. Objective: Gain one yard. The quarterback takes the snap, pivots, hands off the football to the fullback—who hits the line of scrimmage, heads up. The goal is to gain a yard or two. It’s not pretty and it rarely creates a big drama, but it builds confidence by creating a clear goal and accomplishing it. Simply put, if you don’t have the desire and determination to gain a yard, how in the world do you expect to score a touchdown?

Finding something assumes you are looking for it! Finding your Butkus means finding something you already have. It is already part of you, perhaps hidden deep within your psyche or more likely, just hidden in plain sight. Right under your nose – in your heart.

In Kevin Costner’s film “A Field if Dreams,” his character, Ray Kinsella, hears a voice from a cornfield saying, “If you build it, he will come.” He is told to trust whispers and listen to feelings. The voice wants him to listen and then act – purely on faith.

Even if tall corn isn’t calling to you, I’m sure an inspiring thought has crossed your mind while taking a shower or driving your car. A gut feeling that tells you to act.

Your buttkus, I wink, go around and find your rear end a bit south. With both hands I might add! Maybe the reason you haven’t found your Butkus yet is because you’re sitting on it!

So what is Butkus?

No, it’s not butt-kiss, it’s pronounced butt-kus. You say it deliberately and always with attitude. If you’re a sports fan, chances are you’ve heard the name Dick Butkus. In fact, most people in North America have heard the name, even if they don’t know who or what it is.

And yes, it’s a weird name.

But, there is nothing funny about the image or prestigious status that this name represents. As a four-year-old, I was intrigued when I first heard the name and saw the NFL image of Dick Butkus. Actually it was more like a “surprise”.

NFL Films States; “Dick Butkus played football with a religious fervor, a relentless obsession, not to excel, but to dominate and frustrate. For Dick Butkus, it was never a game, a street fight, room for all out, no holds barred. Butkus was the most destructive defender in the game and the NFL He is full of stories of men who have transcended. He was a force of uncontrollable proportions; he was the Moby Dick of the Goldfish Bowl. His career stands as the most enduring work of destruction ever committed on a football field by anyone, anywhere, at any time.”

Dick Butkus is remembered as the toughest man to ever play pro football. A man who, whatever; will not leave He never won a championship or a Superbowl; Hell his team was so bad they didn’t even make it to a playoff game. However, that didn’t stop him from being one of the best players to ever play NFL football.

Myself, when I was twelve years old playing football, I wanted to be Dick Butkus. Everything from his pigeon-toed gait, to the colors of his uniform, was terrifying. All of these captured my imagination. His linebacker role, crouching like a mountain lion ready to pounce, was intimidating enough. But when he moved, fully committed, he launched himself with reckless abandon; He was like no other player on the field.

Batkus, for me, became a metaphor for the movement and a symbol of effort and achievement. No matter the odds, you never give up. If I ordered my butkus, I knew what to do and when to do it.

Now that I picture what Butkus looked like and how important it was, I have to tell you, I didn’t get it right away. In fact, it took me thirty years to understand. I had to dig deep into my memories to find something I already knew.

And that’s the rub! “There’s no point if you don’t know how to use it” is a topic for a later discussion, but for now, it’s safe to say; Just knowing something doesn’t make it valuable.

Knowledgeable people are routinely overworked, underpaid, and admired not just by others but mostly by themselves. Michelangelo, the great artist (not the Ninja Turtle) says “The greatest danger for most of us is not to aim high and fall short; but to aim too low and hit the mark!”

Have you achieved the bottom line of what you ask for? Looking for success in all the wrong places? Like me, you were taught that it took years of suffering for opportunities to materialize. Are they out of your control? Were you asked to learn more, build skills you don’t have, and go where someone else has decided? Then, when you come, again, it will be difficult, in fact life becomes difficult. You must be tough and learn to put up with what you don’t want, – to get what you do! crap

I say, what you want – you want, you find what you seek. What you want doesn’t just exist, more precisely, it already exists within you. It’s not hard, but yes, it’s intense and requires your full attention! Have you heard, I believe in the natural laws of the universe? My point is that the “law of attraction” doesn’t exist as an external magnet to get you what you want, but rather it synchronizes your desires to bring to you what you already have.

In the movie ‘The Lion King’, Mufasa tells his son, Simba, from heaven, “Remember who you are!” Commands, “Your job is to find what, maybe just remember what “is”. It will lead you to find your buttkus.

hit that; Remember who you are! Find your own words, find yours??? In life!

As with basic dive play, create a goal you can believe in – one that builds confidence. Keep it straight, something warm like a puppy. Guaranteed to get a yard when you need it. Just the act of feeling good can put you in the right frame of mind to start noticing what’s important.

It’s not finding what works in life, no, it’s finding your happiness. Trust me, if my dream was a guy named Dick Butkus, what could you want to get any crazier? Open the door of your desire, listen to the realm of your dreams, and then allow the people, places, and things you want to come to you.

Bob Mueller is an EMMY Award winner. He uses the story of finding your buttkus in keynote speeches, training and coaching. http://www.findingyourbutkus.com
