Easiest Transition From Other Youth Sports to Youth Football

As a youth football coach, your job becomes easier as the number of players participating in organized sports increases. Participation in any type of organized sport teaches your players about listening to coaches, dealing with other teammates, competing, working toward a goal, practice, sportsmanship, time management, and teamwork. There are always hurdles for a first-time organized athlete who may not have faced other players who have played.

I am a strong advocate of getting young people involved in a variety of sports at a young age and finding out which sport they enjoy the most. Specializing at a young age can exclude a player from a sport they may love or excel in a sport they can grow from.

Some sports prepare a young football player for football better than others. Again, I’m not suggesting that you prefer these games over others; This is just one observation from 15 years of football coaching which sports have the best transfer of skills to youth football.

Best to worst:

1) Wrestling; By far #1, wrestlers understand leverage and physical contact. They are involved in a sport that requires tremendous physical endurance, so the practices they attend are grueling. Wrestlers are usually very good tacklers and are easy to teach. They are usually “hard” and our practice is a breeze compared to wrestling practice.

2) Hockey

3) Lacrosse

4) Track

5) Martial arts

6) Basketball

7) Baseball

So if you’re recruiting football players, you might want to start with your local youth wrestling program, then work your way down the list. It’s very rare that you’ll find a wrestler, hockey or lacrosse player who doesn’t excel at football.

That’s not to say you can’t find a skateboarder, swimmer, gymnast or BMX racer who could make a good footballer, it’s just that we rarely see them trying to play.
