A Guide to Netball

Netball is a team sport that was originally developed after basketball. In 1892, it was developed with women in mind to accommodate the social norms of women’s participation in sports at the time. Although originally derived from the sport of basketball, netball has more differences than similarities. In England, the rules of basketball were slowly and gradually developed to create the new game ‘net ball’. In the 1960s the rules were standardized internationally and the International Netball Federation was formed. Since its rise in popularity, it is a popular game played in the Commonwealth of Nations. There has been a long and continuous effort to include netball in the Olympics and this is a goal of the INF.

The game consists of two teams of seven players, competing against each other for possession of the ball and scoring points. It is played on a court slightly larger than a basketball court and each game lasts 60 minutes. It is divided into four quarters, each lasting five minutes at halftime. The court itself is made up of three different zones, each zone setting different rules of movement for positions. With seven players on each team, there are different positions you can play. Each position has its own restrictions and court rules.

Defend, attack, score!

It is a fast, energetic and skillful game. The team in possession of the ball aims to get the ball from one end of the pitch to the other, where their goal circle is. They can jump, throw, run and catch a ball. The opposing teams aim is to defend the team and gain possession of the ball. The winning team is the team that has scored the most goals until the end of the match.

As the ball passes between players, all players are allowed to hold the ball for a maximum of 3 seconds before passing at any time. If the ball is in your possession, you must not take more than 1.5 steps while catching the ball. To score a goal during a match, the ball must be passed to a player inside the goal circle. Once it passes to the participants, they must throw the ball into the opponent’s goal ring. For it to count as a score, the ball must go through the hoop. The only two people who can score a goal are the goal shooter or the goal attacker, while inside the goal circle.
