Introduction and early life

James Podsiadly is a professional Australian rules football player who currently plays for the Geelong Cats Football Club in the Australian Football League (AFL). He was born on 10 September 1981; His current weight is around 102 kg and his height is around 1.93 m. He plays in the forward position and wears the jersey number 31. He made his AFL debut in 2010 after playing in the Victoria Football League for a few years; He was eventually drafted into the AFL by Geelong Cats FC in 2010. He was raised in Spotswood, a suburb of Melbourne.

Career start

James played for Yarraville and the Western Jets Football Club before being signed up by the Essendon Football Club in 1999 during the AFL Rookie Draft. He was the 58th pick in that draft. He later went on to play for Collingwood in the VFL after being dropped by Essendon. He played for Essendon’s affiliate team and was dropped after playing around nineteen games for the club. He was selected eighth overall in the 2001 AFL Rookie Draft. However, his fortunes at Collingwood did not last as he was delisted in 2002 after playing just three games for the club in the 2002 AFL pre-season tournament.

James Podsiadly featured in the VFL with Werribee Football Club in the 2003 season where he won the best and fairest award. He won another award as leading goal kicker in 2005, breaking fellow teammate Nick Sautner’s six-year record. He was involved in pre-season training with the Western Bulldogs in 2005 and Richmond in 2006. But all these training sessions did not lead to an AFL contract for James. He continued to play for Werribee until the 2008 season which saw him reach some significant heights in his career. This season, Podsiadly earned his 100th cap for Werribee and also won more awards as the club’s best and fairest. He also won the 2008 JJ Liston Trophy.

AFL professional career

James played with Werribee for about six seasons. He left after the sixth season to take up another offer with the Geelong VFL club. His new role at Geelong was a dual role as player and fitness coach. He captained the team in the 2009 VFL season; He won the club’s best and fairest award that year and was also the leading goal kicker with around 68 goals at the end of the season. His contribution also qualified him for life membership of the VFL. He represented the VFL in around three state games and was part of the teams that won the VFL Team of the Year award in 2005, 2006, 2008 and 2009.

In 2009, James Podsiadly was drafted into the AFL as a mature rookie by the Geelong Cats Football Club at the age of 28. He was the fifty (50) pick in the 2009 Rookie Draft. James made his debut against the Fremantle Football Club. This happened in the third round of the 2010 season. At the end of that season, he received 13 Brownlow Medal votes in his first year playing in the AFL. He has played a total of nineteen games this year and managed to score around forty-nine (49) goals; Setting a record for AFL rookie listed players. As a result of his outstanding performances in his first year in the league, he was promoted to the senior team at the end of the 2010 season.
