Cape San Blas Vacation – My Favorite Dining Options For Daytrips to Mexico Beach Or Apalachicola

So you’re coming to Cape San Blas for a beach vacation this summer! For some, this means less time spent eating. (And for you, look for future articles on where to catch or buy the best seafood, how to prepare it, and other “do-it-yourself” tips) But for many people, being on vacation means taking a vacation from the kitchen. , a lot. In a recent Izine article, I did my best to provide a complete list of all the eating establishments on Cape San Blas, on the way from the Cape to Port St. Joe, and in Port St. Joe.

This article will expand on our picks for two of our favorite nearby towns, Mexico Beach and Apalachicola. Why these two cities? Well, even though the Cape has fantastic weather most of the time, it seems that one rainy day we could go on our vacation, we’d go to the Appalachians or Mexico Beach to shop, see, and eat. The clouds are gone. Shopping in Apalachicola ranges from neat spots like Blue or Avenue E to antique shops and another personal favorite, Petunia’s Pet Boutique. In Mexico Beach, my daughter’s favorite place is Two Gulls, a cute store on Highway 98’s charming strip of shops.

Another disclaimer, I don’t want to disparage any of the great eateries in these cities that aren’t mentioned — it certainly is No It is intended to be an extensive list. These are the only places my family has visited over the years. And yes, we are creatures of habit and, like the monarch butterflies that migrate to Cape San Blas every year, we visit the same place over and over again!

Mexico Beach — Remember, they are on Central Time and Cape Eastern Time!

Beach Pizza, 2902 Highway 98, 850-648-4600. Gourmet pizza and hot and cold sub sandwiches. My kids love their pizza and want to stop by anytime we are in Mexico Beach. (Also, for those of you staying at our only Mexico beach vacation rental, Gary Gift delivers beach pizza!)

Mango Marley’s, 3104 Highway 98, 850-648-5000. Great seafood, burgers, “Jamaican Me Crazy” chips and other good appetizers. Full bar, video games, and something is always going on, whether it’s a football game or the latest I hear, Wednesday night Wii Bowling. We were pleasantly surprised last summer when we stayed with a large group and everyone enjoyed their meal.

Regan’s Pub and Oyster Bar, 8066 W. Highway 98, 850-647-2800. I have eaten many Reagan’s oysters at special events and parties and they are delicious! They have a cozy atmosphere with a restaurant on one side and a lounge with pool, darts and a jukebox on the other.

Sharon Cafe, 1100 Highway 98, 850-648-8634. Great place for breakfast or lunch. Kids love “happy face” pancakes as they grow up.

Toucan’s Restaurant, 812 Highway 98, 850-648-8207. One of my kids’ favorite places to eat when they were little. There is a beach-side playground and indoor, porch and outdoor seating. We stayed this spring break and had a great meal and watched the sunset. Everything from full dinners to hamburgers to seafood baskets and appetizers. Full bar.

Apalachicola (there are a lot of places we haven’t tried yet, but these are our favorites!)

Apalachicola Seafood Grill, 100 Market Street, 850-653-9510. It is one of the oldest restaurants in Apalach and is located on the corner of the town’s main streets. I think that’s partly why we tried it first in the city. The kids love fried seafood, and one of our friends loves gumbo — or maybe it’s chowder? I can’t remember, but we always have to be sure we go early to get her some or her hives!

Boss Oyster, 123 Water Street, 850-653-9364. Nice setting on the water. A casual atmosphere and outdoor seating is also available. You can order your oysters 17 different ways and you can mix and match your dozen! Also serves other types of seafood, but I always eat oysters. They serve lunch and dinner.

Owl Cafe, 15 Avenue D, serves lunch and dinner. They serve Sunday brunch but we never did. This is one of my favorite places and we have always had wonderful food and service at Ghubad. I love the black grouper, but the steaks, pastas and specials are also excellent. The Owl is a little more upscale and a little more expensive than some of our other favorite haunts, but we think it’s worth it.

Papa Joe’s Oyster Bar, 301-B Market Street, 850-653-1189. Another great place to get oysters! They serve lunch and dinner and serve steaks, salads and pasta as well as seafood.

That location on Eastpointe, on 98th, now has a sister restaurant, The Place in Appalachian, 17 Avenue E, 850-653-9898. I haven’t been to the Appalachian location, but we love the original “That Place on 98” located at 500 US Highway 98 in Eastpointe. Their number at that location is 850-670-9898. The website says Eastpointe is closed for the season but to use the new Apalachicola location. Next time we’ll try to fall down. Eastpoint Restaurant offers great food, great views and friendly, casual service. Yes, we all have t-shirts from there too because we love the name.

We’ve never been to some of the other restaurants in Apalachicola that people say are excellent. They include Verandah, Magnolia Grill and Tamara. As I said, we are creatures of habit and may only go this route once during our week’s summer vacation at Cape San Blas. Someday we’ll be lucky enough to go down full time and visit all these great places. So feel free to choose from our “tried and true” list or expand to some of the other great restaurants in any city. Bon appetit!
