Coaching Youth Football – Offensive Line Cut Blocking

A unique style of offensive line blocking is called a chop or cut. Over the years, the cut or chop block has been called a “dirty” technique. A cut or chop works great and if taught correctly can keep a dominating defender at bay. A cut or chop should never be attempted with malicious intent to injure any player. I will get confirmation from the organization rules that cuts and chop blocks are allowed before I teach any player.

The cut blocking technique is used by offensive linemen, and sometimes other blockers, by legally blocking below the waist (i.e., through the front of the defensive player) in an attempt to bring defenders to the ground, making it impossible for them to run back. Less time for backs to find gaps in defence. The technique is somewhat controversial, as it poses a risk of serious leg injury to blocking defenders.

The San Francisco 49ers of the 1980s and early 1990s were famous for their cut technique (and leg-whipping blocking technique, which is not legal), a tactic that was eventually used by the NFL’s Denver Broncos in the mid-90s. The Denver Broncos gained a level of notoriety using their cut-blocking style (often called a malicious play by other teams) that produced the NFL’s most rushing offense for over ten years, but also injured many of the Broncos’ defensive football opponents. by cut blocks. In a 2004 Monday Night Football game, Cincinnati Bengals defensive tackle Tony Williams was injured for the year by a cut block (by Broncos lineman George Foster), and in 2005, Jacksonville Jaguars defensive back Paul Spicer was seriously injured. Cut block by Broncos lineman Matt Lepsis. In response to complaints, in 2004 Broncos head coach Mike Shanahan explained to local reporters and showed them some NFL game film (viewed and used only by coaches) that showed how all teams in the NFL use cut-blocking techniques.

As you can see from the paragraph above, there is a great deal of controversy regarding cut blocking in the NFL, so please make sure you are careful if you decide to teach cut blocking to your youth football team. It is important to show only safe, legal techniques for such a potentially dangerous block. We use a simple, yet safe rule of thumb when it comes to chop blocks. If you are getting hit and can stay on all fours, you can only block the crab. Our coaches have trained all players to drive into defenders or crab on the fours.
