Chiropractic Care Gives Teenagers Relief From Back Pain

About half of adolescents have musculoskeletal pain. This conclusion has come out from a recent scientific research. This article will discuss pain in the musculoskeletal system in adolescents, especially pain in the neck and lower back.

Here in Western Pennsylvania, young children are returning to school and it is wise to be aware that some common physical stresses can cause problems. Not surprisingly, adults who engage in vigorous physical activity can injure their necks and backs.

For example, many of our teenagers are participating in various school activities and sports.

I have patients who are involved in the school marching band. They are in “band camp” which requires them to practice for several hours every day. Many of them are playing heavy instruments like dhol-tasha, tuba. Some are on the dance team. A few percent of them will develop neck and back conditions.

Likewise, cheerleaders are being given enhanced, pre-season training. These students engage in incredibly acrobatic cheerleading routines. There are girls called “fliers” who are literally launched into the air and perform gymnastic maneuvers like flips. Then there are the youngsters who are considered the “base” who should catch the Flyers. Cheerleaders have a higher injury rate than football players.

Speaking of football players, we all know that they are intensely involved in their preseason practices and it is not difficult to imagine the physical stress they go through.

Locally boys and girls are practicing football. It is common for soccer players to use their head to propel and direct or “head the ball” to the desired location. I have seen many soccer players who have injured their necks doing this maneuver.

A recent research study published in BMC Pediatrics, June 2019, found that nearly half of adolescents experience musculoskeletal pain. The study noted that a survey completed by 1021 teenagers revealed that 46% had pain in one or more areas of the body. Data show that adolescents with musculoskeletal pain in at least one body site have lower quality of life and poorer sleep quality than their pain-free peers. In addition, participants with pain in multiple sites reported lower quality of life and sleep quality scores than those with pain in only one site.

Clearly our youth are at risk for musculoskeletal neck and back conditions.

Fortunately, seeing a doctor of chiropractic can help many of these teens. Chiropractic care has always been shown to be a potential solution for children experiencing painful conditions. Chiropractic therapy is effective, safe, and does not involve the use of potentially harmful drugs and medications, and it does not involve the use of invasive procedures such as surgery.

If a child complains of neck pain, back pain, back pain, backache or headache, it should not be ignored. Seeing a chiropractor for a consultation is highly recommended.
