Letting Go: 5 Limiting Beliefs Blocking Your Personal Goal Setting

Here are five limiting beliefs about personal goal setting that I discovered last Sunday when a passerby overheard my Irish friend and I taking some photos. He came to chat with us.

He is just finishing his final year in Sydney and unfortunately he couldn’t get another visa and had to go back to Ireland.

I identified 5 limiting beliefs that make him lose his smarts quickly:

1. Quit the blame game

The man was blaming the economy, other people and circumstances for not getting him a visa to stay in Australia. His overall focus was on blaming others instead of looking at himself and what he could do about the situation.

At the end of the day, life will have its ups and downs, but blaming others is not the answer!

2. Take the compliment

During a lull in the conversation, I noticed that the guy had a wonderful camera around his neck that he was using to take some photos of Sydney before he left. It was much better than our smartphone cameras so I told him he had a brilliant camera. He looked at it and said, “Hey, I guess that’s fine.”

One should learn to be a good ‘receiver’ in life. I learned this in a business seminar. It is imperative that when someone gives you a compliment, you accept it and not reject it. Try to take it seriously and be grateful that someone took the time to acknowledge something good in you. If we always put ourselves down, our subconscious will believe this to be true and we will struggle with our goal setting.

3. baby steps

The man told me and my friends about his master plan to return to Sydney. He told us that when he went home he would go to college for six years and then work for two to three years and then come back to Sydney. I’m not saying it’s wrong to think too far ahead, it’s always good to have a plan but this guy got a bit irritated and stressed afterwards. He started paying attention to the wrong thing. He said with a desperate look, as if he couldn’t believe it.

He was feeling ‘overwhelmed’ and thinking about things. Instead of trying to create everything in his head, he should focus on baby steps. By doing this, each step is broken down and doesn’t seem so difficult to achieve.

4. Response is key

Once again this can go back to the ‘blame game’. There are situations that arise that can take away from us, both physically and mentally, no doubt. How we always respond is what defines us. Sure the guy didn’t get his visa, for whatever reason, but his response wasn’t helping either. He was wasting his energy and time and things should have been done differently. It didn’t happen and there was nothing he could do about it. He has to get back up, dust himself off and start taking action to change his life!

5. Imprisonment of negativity

I was watching a TV show earlier and someone mentioned the ‘imprisonment of negativity’, because focusing on negativity means your mind is at the mercy of it. What we think, we create. This man’s body language and overall tone was so negative, someone could cut the tension with a knife. It was difficult to maintain a conversation with that person because he just kept leaning towards negativity. It’s a habit he has to stop. How? By creating a positive affirmation and acknowledging all the above points. He won’t achieve his goals by always focusing on the negative, that’s a guarantee.

To reach our highest goals we have to change our attitude. Change it and we can change our world from within!
