F.O.M.O Vs. J.O.M.O

Most people recognize the acronym FOMO which stands for Fear of Missing Out. I recently learned a new word (for me anyway) JOMO; Which is the joy of missing out. I immediately fell in love with JOMO and started using it (some might say overusing it).

I didn’t know why JOMO struck a chord with me, but I thought it was because it was something I had experienced many times before, but I didn’t have a name for it. As I pondered this question, I soon realized that it ran much deeper than my previous experiences with those feelings.

It turns out that JOMO is pretty much what my most successful clients experience on a regular basis. I first noticed this in my athlete clients but soon began to see it in my more successful coaches and professional clients as well.

Conversely, I began to notice that many of my clients had an abundance of FOMO and many of my clients struggling to find happiness lacked JOMO. This was despite the fact that they often achieved great financial and career success.

As I began to pay more attention to what I was seeing in my clients, I began to see patterns in their development directly related to how JOMO and FOMO manifested in their lives. My clients with a strong sense of JOMO rarely miss or reschedule their appointments with me (although this may be partly due to my strict cancellation policy). Those with more FOMO tend to cancel at a higher frequency.

I used to, only half-jokingly, say that the worst day of every year for me was the day the new Madden Football video game came out because most of my NFL football clients were obsessed with it. Not just because they love playing it and want to be the first to play it (FOMO), but also looking for validation to see how it measured up to the game. Incidentally, no one I’ve ever worked with felt they were as good at video games as they were in the NFL, with programmers always taking a step slower, with less potential in their opinion.

While my clients with FOMO feel the need to say yes to every invitation, my clients with a lot of JOMO see missing parties, events, or not traveling as an opportunity to better themselves. their competition. Their rewards were intrinsic and FOMO-prone personalities are addictive so they didn’t feel the need for most extrinsic rewards.

The drive in my clients with JOMO also seems to be more purposeful, making the work they put in more productive. I’ve had many FOMO driven clients who put a lot of effort into their craft and probably put in just as many hours, but they didn’t get the same bang for their buck as my JOMO driven clients.

I recently learned that JOMO can be experienced retroactively on March 12, 2019, when news broke of a college admissions scandal (code named Varsity Blues by the FBI) through several high-profile allegations. You see, I wanted to meet with a man who was a ringleader (Rick Singer) in August of 2012 to help some of his company’s high-end clients with their performance. Inevitably, his flight from San Francisco was delayed and our attempts to reschedule failed, so we never met. Needless to say, I experienced major JOMO when this news came out.

That whole episode reminded me of a piece of old advice I heard many times growing up: Be careful what you want so you can get it. So the next time you have to ‘miss out’ on something, please remember that sometimes it can be good to be wrong.
