2009 Miami Dolphins Fantasy Football Preview

The Miami Dolphins came out of nowhere to win the AFC East in 2009 before defeating the Baltimore Ravens in the first round of the playoffs. Two key factors in the dramatic turnaround rest with the acquisition of QB Chad Pennington, who was let go when the NY Jets signed Brett Favre, and the emergence of a Wildcat formation that proved to be a safety for many teams (namely New England). In fantasy terms the Dolphins don’t really have players that fantasy owners feel comfortable with week in and week out. Let’s dissect Miami in terms of fantasy prospects coming into 2009.

After building the foundation on the offensive and defensive lines in last year’s draft, the Dolphins added to the framework with more skill position players on day two of the 2009 NFL Draft. It was a good move because the Dolphins have very few playmakers on the offensive side of the ball. Chad Pennington is back for another year but Chad Hein appears to be the QB of the future for the team. Even Pennington in his hey days with the Jets was really nothing more than a No. 2 QB or someone who could play based on match ups.

So, it shouldn’t be a surprise if Pennington goes hitless in most 12-team leagues this summer. Obviously, Hein has no fantasy value at this point either. The only QB on Miami’s roster that would be worth taking a very late round flyer is former WV QB Pat White who the Dolphins picked with in the second round. I highly doubt White will play any QB this year and I’m assuming the Dolphins drafted him specifically for the Wildcats who were so successful last year. It would be perfect for White, and he would be an upgrade over Ronnie Brown in that capacity. White, would represent the only Dolphins QB I can think of in the final round of my draft this summer.

Miami’s running game was fairly decent in 2009 as Ronnie Brown and Ricky Williams combined for 1575 rushing yards at 4.2 yards per carry. There is a problem with the idea though. If you read my “Draft Running Backs Early: Buyer Beware” column, that’s exactly what I’m talking about. While it would be beneficial to insert a RB into the NFL by committee, it represents fantasy owners’ worst nightmare. I personally drafted Ricky at 420 last year and to be honest with you, I thought he would run for over 1000 yards because I didn’t think Brown’s health would give Williams the majority of the carries all season. Needless to say I was wrong as the Browns knee held up better than I thought. Don’t expect much from either of them in 2009 either. The committee will go ahead and expect at least half of Brown’s 10 rushing TDs to come in Wildcat formations to make matters worse and add White to the mix to diminish Brown’s role in the Wildcats. Think of Brown as a No. 3 RB or flex start, and reserve Williams for a late-round pick in most leagues.

The receiving corps for Miami is worse than its running game in terms of fantasy potential. The only consistent threat on the Dolphins at this point lies with TE Anthony Fasano. In 2008, Fasano caught 34 balls for 454 yards and 7 TDs. That’s an outstanding TD total for an NFL TE, and Fasano clearly became the go-to guy for Pennington as the season went on. I don’t believe Fasano was a fluke and with Pennington back for a second year there’s no reason to think he can’t be good for 5-6 TDs this year. Consider Fasano a low-end No. 1 TE or, at worst, a No. 2 TE.

Although, reforming Ted Ginn Jr. hasn’t come close to living up to his potential. Plus, Davone Bess and Greg Camarillo are nothing more than emergency stop gaps, and if you rely on either of them to consistently produce for you, your season is likely to end early. Miami drafted Patrick Turner out of USC and Brian Hartline out of Ohio State University to help bolster the receiving corps. The Dolphins are high on Turner after a breakout 2008 campaign and subsequent impressive Senior Bowl scouts. At 6’5″ he gives the Dolphins a big target that the team lacked. Look for both Turner and Hartline to make the team but not warrant being drafted this summer in a league with 12 teams or less. Maybe later in the big leagues as a late round flyer but more than that. No. Both Ginn and Camarillo are considered late round reserves until they start producing quality fantasy points on a consistent basis.

Dan Carpenter converted on all 40 of his PAT attempts and was 21-25 on FGs making him a reliable fantasy option in 2009. Jinn makes DST interesting but neither unit is worth playing every week at this point especially since it looks like they have 4 games against TO and Randy Moss. In summary, with the exception of Carpenter and Fasano I wouldn’t rush to draft many Dolphins for your fantasy roster for the upcoming season. Next up tomorrow: The New York Jets.
