A Woman’s True Confession: I Finally Understand the Male Obsession with Football

Football season is here, which means that for the next few weeks – 90% of the male population in the US will spend their “free time” watching the game on TV (the bigger the screen, the better), attending football. sports (Friday=high school, Saturday=college, Sunday and Monday=pro), and of course every day of the week they will be moaning,

Screaming or whining about their fantasy league, uh, sorry, in most cases – make it a fantasy league… because it seems you can’t just join one.

Now, I grew up in a female dominated household – 3 women (Mom, me and my sister) and one man (Dad, unless you count the dog… but he tended to be loyal to the person with the food in hand) , and I have to admit. Of course, we made Dad as pathetic as possible about his “obsession” with football. We screamed and fussed every time he tried to watch the game, and sooner or later he would usually give in and let us watch the “girl stuff”.

My first husband was never a sports fan, so in my adulthood, my exposure to football was minimal, but a few decades later – new husband, new life…new lifestyle.

And suddenly I found myself in the midst of a very sports-oriented family – with a special emphasis on football. So, for the first time in my life, I found myself attending a Friday night high school game, yelling at the refs for my stepson as he ran up and down the field, though I wasn’t always sure why I was yelling. But hey! You get caught up in the excitement of the moment.

For 3 years, I never missed a single game, through rain and snow, I cheered the team together, sometimes for victory and sometimes for defeat. I grew to understand the game, and enjoyed being a fan of every game. I clapped and sang their fight song when the team came home after every win and endured the long, quiet ride when they lost.

But – I didn’t really understand the “obsession” until my stepson’s last game in high school.

The game was over, the weather was cool and drizzly, the song was sung and the senior returned to the field one last time, helmet in hand. They stood there in silence, exchanging hugs and pats on the back, and one by one, they dropped to one knee and looked around as the lights around the stadium flickered.

The silence was deafening – and the emotion overwhelming.

Most of these kids had played football together since age 9, practicing and playing as a team for months every year, sharing bumps and bruises and injuries, big wins and big losses, developing a camaraderie that few women will ever experience.

And now suddenly – it’s over. Most kids will never wear pads and uniforms again, never be part of that team spirit again. If you play baseball – you can play some form of it for the rest of your life, but football is over for most men with the last Friday night game in high school.

And that’s where the obsession with all things football is born – the constant quest to recapture a little piece of that high school team experience, the closeness, the camaraderie that made all that work worthwhile.

In just a few moments that night, I suddenly understood the deep chasm left in these young men’s lives, the sudden emptiness in their hearts, and I grieved for a loss that I will never truly understand.

My stepson was lucky – he now plays college ball on Saturdays so the “last game” is a bit late. I still don’t share the same enthusiasm for weekend football marathons as my husband and his two boys – but at least I find it easier to understand their passion/obsession and it goes a long way towards peaceful, happy weekends at home.

Of course, having more than one TV helped too….
