Football Place Kickers – How to Kick Field Goals

The purpose of this article is to discuss place kicking, teaching football kickers the art of kicking field goals. We will take you through the steps required to become a successful place kicker.

The tips written here are for soccer style place kickers.

1. Ball Position:

The place kicker lines up 7 yards behind center. For practice purposes, start about 20 yards from the goal post. Whether the ball is set by the holder or placed on the kicking tee, it should lean back slightly.

2. Determining the position of the place kicker:

1st. Take a step back from where the ball will be placed.

2nd Depending on your comfort zone, take two or more steps to the side, measuring the distance from where the ball will be addressed.

3rd Regardless of the distance required to kick a field goal, it is very important that kickers always measure the same distance.

4 th Correct angle to address and kick the ball. Successful place kickers come to the ball from half the distance of their side steps. Field goal kickers must take 6 steps to the side, while they must take 3 steps forward to kick the ball.

3. Look at the top right, imagine the ball going through to split the goal post.

4. Approaching the ball for a place kick:

1st: Jab the ground with the plant foot to initiate forward motion.

2nd Take a kicking step.

3rd Begin coming towards the exit halfway.

4 th When you’re ready to kick the ball, plant the foot firmly into the ground, starting with the heel.

5th The foot of the plant should be pointed directly toward the goal post, even with the ball and about a foot away from the ball.

5. Kick the ball

1st. By placing the weight on the foot of the plant, ensure that the body is towards the goal post.

2nd Hit the ball with the top bone in the middle of the foot.

3rd Kick the ball into the lower third, otherwise you risk the ball going up. Hitting the ball lower increases the height.

4 th Keep the head down and extend the kicking leg as far as possible. Lifting the head early can cause the ball to go right for right-footed kickers and left for left-footed kickers.

Kickers should warm up for about 20 minutes before practice. These warm ups should include stretching exercises to avoid pulled muscles and to get the most out of kicking practice. Remember it is quality and not quantity that makes a successful field goal kicker.
