Fantasy Football Sleepers – Running Back Rankings in Fantasy Football 2009

Fantasy football leagues require you to start 2 RBs, and with flex positions in those leagues, you may even find yourself needing a third RB starter. Since we’re usually talking 12 man leagues, that means 24 to 36 RBs will start every week and you’ll need a backup, because the injury bug and underperformers will always bite you. How do you avoid the misery of overspending on RBs and where are those cheaper value picks? We are off and running with the RB sleeper for 2009.

There are basically 3 levels of RB fantasy production for you to consider. The top tier is 250 to 300 fantasy points in the standard scoring format, with about 4 or 5 RB candidates. The second tier is 200 to 250 points, around 10 or 11 RBs. Then you will have 15 people who will give you 150 to 200 marks. This accounts for only 29 or 30 truly productive runners. You can see how important it is to get two sleepers and get them at a discount.

Sleeper #1

It’s almost silly that Derrick Ward has so many things going for him in Tampa Bay. Earnest Graham will share carries with him, but after Graham’s ankle injury last year and Ward signing a big contract in the off-season, it’s clear where TB will be passing the ball most of the time. Ward averaged 5.3 yards per carry over the last two years in New York and is also a threat to catch the ball. Find 48 catches, 1500 total yards from scrimmage and 8 TDs. Those kind of numbers put him in the bottom of the second tier of backs, and you can expect him to be picked in the sixth or seventh round, not bad for third or fourth round numbers.

Sleeper #2

Donald Brown is a speedy UConn rookie tailback who impressed the Indy bigwigs with his hands as much as his legs. If you remember how running back Joseph Addai did three seasons ago with a committee effort, and a less impressive factor than Addai’s 2008, I think you can expect 150 fantasy points from the Browns. Addai hasn’t played a full season in 2 years now, and Brown will probably go in the 12-14 rounds. The draft is all about getting a 6th round product in the 12th round and I don’t think you can go wrong here.

Anyone can pick Matt Forte with the 5th overall pick, but knowing who to pick in the mid to late rounds without paying too much wins fantasy titles. Look for things like backups, split guys with injured guys, and team-jumpers going into favorable situations. If you keep these things in mind, you’ll get good value from the RB position and grab a sleeper or two.
