How Understanding Your Prescription Can Save You Hundreds on Eyeglass Purchases

Knowing the basics of your prescription will help you shop smarter and save hundreds of dollars in the process.

Myopia or nearsightedness refers to people who have trouble focusing on distant objects. Opticians use what are called minus lenses to correct myopia. A minus lens is characterized by being thick at the edges of the lens and thin in the center.

Hyperopia or farsightedness refers to people who have trouble focusing on near objects. Opticians use plus lenses to improve vision. Plus lenses are thicker in the center and thinner at the edges.

Presbyopia, or Greek for “old vision,” usually occurs after forty, as the eye muscles lose their ability to accommodate near-distance objects.

Presbyopic patients are those who require correction for both distance and near. Bifocal lenses are used to correct this type of eye condition.

Prescriptions are usually written in this form:

Round Cylindrical Axis

OD -3.25 -1.00 180

OS +0.25 -1.25 85

Add +2.25

The above prescription is for a person who is presbyopic.

OD or Oculus Dexter is Latin for right eye and OS or Oculus Sinister is Latin for left eye. DV is far vision and NV is near vision. Add refers to the correction required for reading.

The first set of numbers, or round numbers, indicate the correction required for distance, or the power of the lens to properly see distant objects.

The second segment or cylindrical value corrects for astigmatism. Astigmatism occurs when the cornea is shaped like a football instead of a basketball.

Because the eye rotates 180 degrees on its axis, the axis portion of the prescription indicates the meridian where correction is needed.

Eyeglass lenses are made of one of three materials; They are all made of plastic with what they call a different index. Basically, the higher the index, the thinner the material.

CR39 or basic plastic is 1.498, poly is 1.586, and high-index comes in a few different flavors, with index ratios between 1.53 and 1.74. The higher the index, the thinner, lighter and more expensive the lens.

Polycarbonate is better for safety, while a higher-index is recommended for someone with a high prescription, such as -5.00 or higher. If you have a really thick prescription, polycarbonate or high index is thinner and the recommended material for you.

CR-39 or plastic, meanwhile, are good for those who just need basic glasses for reading or distance vision, but don’t want to spend too much. This is for someone with a low prescription. Cr-39 has excellent optics, but is thicker than polycarbonate. This is good for someone with a prescription between +2.25 and -3.00. It is also good for a backup pair. However, I wouldn’t recommend it for someone who needs security.

Polycarbonate is the recommended lens for those who need safety. It is ideal for children and those participating in high-impact sports and those who require safety glasses in the workplace. Polycarbonate can be 40% thinner and 30% lighter than plastic

High index lenses are recommended for those who have a high prescription. This is the best lens if you want the thinnest and lightest lens. Like polycarbonate they provide 100% protection from harmful UV rays. AR coating gives them the best optical performance and appearance. Prescriptions from -3.00 to +3.00 and above will appear too thin in high index lenses.

Anti-reflective coatings help reduce unwanted reflections and reduce glare and eye strain from monitors and glare from oncoming traffic when you’re driving at night.

Ultraviolet (UV) protection also helps protect the eyes from harmful radiation.

Prescription sunglasses protect the eyes from harmful radiation while improving vision.

Those who prefer to wear only one pair indoors and outdoors can opt for photochromatic lenses that transform into sunglasses outdoors and clear indoors.
